The quick-starting Montreal Canadiens will try to push their winning streak to five straight games tonight as they kick off a road trip against the Edmonton Oilers. Listen to the Canadiens and Oilers live on TSN Radio 690 starting at 8pm et. The Habs will lean on Dustin Tokarski between the pipes for tonights contest, with Carey Price expected to get the call in goal Tuesday versus the Calgary Flames. Montreal is set to play three straight in Western Canada after finishing off a perfect four-game homestand with Saturdays 3-1 win over the New York Rangers. Price made 34 saves in the win in the first meeting between the teams since last seasons Eastern Conference final. Price sustained a knee injury in Game 1 of the 2014 East finals and missed the remainder of the series, a contributing factor to the Rangers prevailing in six games. The standout goaltender was healthy and in top form on Saturday, however, yielding just a first-period goal to Carl Hagelin to help Montreal move to 7-1-0 on the young season. I thought we played really well. Things are coming around, said Price afterward. The guys are letting me see the puck. The short rebounds Im letting out are being gobbled up by our D-men. Max Pacioretty had a goal and an assist in the win, while Tomas Plekanec and Lars Eller also scored. Price is only 1-5-1 with a 3.71 goals against average and .857 save percentage in seven prior meetings with the Oilers, while Tokarski has never faced them. While Montreal is off to a fast start to the season, the Oilers are looking to rebound from some early struggles. They opened the campaign 0-4-1, but have since ripped off three straight wins. Edmonton secured another victory in the fourth contest of a seven-game homestand on Friday, using a four-goal third period to down the Carolina Hurricanes 6-3. The Oilers scored three straight goals after Carolina tied the contest with 12:10 left in regulation. Rookie Leon Draisaitl started the game-winning run with his first career NHL goal as the third overall pick of the 2014 draft one-timed David Perrons cross-ice feed with 7:05 to play. It was really exciting. Its something that every hockey player dreams of as a kid, said Draisaitl. Jordan Eberle finished with two goals and an assist while Jesse Joensuu, Matt Hendricks and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins all lit the lamp for Edmonton. Nugent- Hopkins has scored in three straight games. Ben Scrivens made 27 saves in the victory. He is 1-2-0 with a 2.75 GAA and .903 save percentage in four prior meetings with the Canadiens, including three starts. The Oilers and Canadiens split their two meetings a season ago, with each team winning on the road. Montreal has still lost eight of its past 11 in Edmonton, however. SPIELBERG, Austria -- Red Bulls hopes for a triumph on its home circuit were dampened Friday as Mercedes regained its dominance in Formula One, clearly setting the pace on the opening day of practice for the Austrian Grand Prix. With Daniel Ricciardos maiden victory in Canada two weeks ago, Red Bull ended a six-race winning streak by Mercedes but the Australian driver and his teammate Sebastian Vettel did not come close to matching their rivals speed on the Red Bull Ring. Lewis Hamilton beat teammate Nico Rosberg to the fastest time in the second practice. Hamilton completed his best lap on the 4.3-kilometre (2.7-mile) track in 1 minute, 9.542 seconds, topping Rosberg by 0.377. Ferraris Fernando Alonso was almost a second off the lead in third. Vettel came sixth, more than 1.4 seconds behind Hamilton, while Ricciardo posted the eighth fastest time. Mercedes also came 1-2 in the opening practice, with Rosberg beating Hamilton by 0.140. "Its so close between the two of us," Rosberg said about the fight with Hamilton for pole position. "Im hoping we will still have the edge on everybody else. That seems to be the case today." However, Hamilton said he wouldnt mind if Rosberg started in front of him on Sunday. "Hunting definitely brings out the better side," the 2008 F1 champion said. "When you are in front, you feel vulnerable and any mistake you make you are going to be caught." In the morning session, Ricciardo and Vettel came only 13th and 15th respectively. "We clearly did better in the afternoon," Vettel said. "We are not there where we want to be when it comes to speed ... but it will be warmer on Saturday and Sunday and I think that will bring us closer." In the first session, Vettel brought his car back to the garage undamaged following a spectacular incident in the final turn. He came off the track and spun twice on the grass before the car came to a standstill on the track again. "That wasnt planned of course," the four-time champion said. "I went too wide and the wet grass was slippery." Ricciardo also spun on the same spot shortly afterward, prompting team boss Christian Horner to joke "they were just warming up the crowd." "We are trying to find out the limit, and both just came on the grass," said Horner, adding the track was still lacking grip during the first session. "There was also a little bit of rain in the air. Thankfully everything is fine." Rosberg quit his first practice after 19 laps with a minor problem to his hybrid engine, enabling his technicians to fix the problem in time for the afternoons session. The German, however, couldnt keep up with Hamilton this time and didnt hide his anger as he was unaware over engine tests his team was applying on his car toward the end of the second session. "I was suddenly losing power and asked over the radio what was happening," Rosberg said. "Only then they told me they had changed my engine settings." Rosberg leads Hamilton in the drivers standings by 140-118 points going into Sundays race, the first GP in Austria since 2003. Most of the 22 drivers knew the track only from computer simulation. Alonso is one of just four drivers who raced on the track before, alongside McLarens Jenson Button, Ferraris Kimi Raikkonen and Williams Felipe Massa. The track is one of the shortest on the F1 calendar and features fast straights and only nine turns. Weather conditions could become an issue in the race as strong winds in the second practice Friday caused several drivers problems, especially on the third and eighth turns. The second session was considerably faster than the first as temperatures went up and teams were able to test their so-called supersoft tires, which helped cut lap times by approximately 0.6 seconds. The third practice is scheduled for Saturday, followed by the qualifying. Neither was surprising. "Look what hes done all year," Blue Jays manager John Gibbons said after a 7-2 win over the Boston Red Sox on Thursday. "Whos pitched better in baseball?" Buehrle (8-1) has eight wins through May for the first time since 2002 and an ERA of 2.16. He gave up two runs in the first two innings, but by then Toronto had seven, starting with homers on consecutive pitches by Melky Cabrera and Jose Bautista in the first inning. That gave the Blue Jays a major league-high 67 homers and gave Buehrle a big cushion. The 15-year veteran lefty blanked the Red Sox for his final five innings and allowed seven hits and no walks while striking out five in seven innings. Dustin McGowan pitched two shutout innings as the Blue Jays took a half-game lead over the New York Yankees in the AL East. "Its nice, obviously" to lead the majors in wins, "but Ive always said you can go out your next eight starts and (stink) and be under .500," Buehrle said. "I try to throw it out the window and get ready for my next start." Toronto improved to 8-2 in its past 10 games, while Boston lost its seventh straight. The Red Sox went 0-6 on their homestand, the first time since June 1994, when they also lost six in a row at Fenway Park, that they were winless on a homestand of at least six games. "Were in a stretch of games here where were giving up too many runs early and were scuffling to score runs," Boston manager John Farrell said. "Thats a dangerous combination." Red Sox ace Jon Lester (4-6) had his worst outing of the season, allowing seven runs and seven hits through 1 1-3 innings. Then he settled down and retired 12 straight batters before giving up a single to Kevin Pillar with one out in the seventh. But Pillar was caught stealing. Lester left with one out in the seventh after allowing 10 hits and striking out just three. He had averaged an AL-best 10.83 strikeouts per nine innings. "The list goes on and on of things that I just flat out diddnt do," Lester said.dddddddddddd "I just wasnt able to do it with anything. Pick a pitch, I wasnt able to do it." Buehrle retired 11 of his last 12 batters. He began the day tied with Zack Greinke, Rick Porcello and Adam Wainwright with seven wins each. The Dodgers Greinke was scheduled to pitch against the New York Mets on Thursday night. Buehrles only loss came at home against Boston on April 25 when he allowed seven runs in an 8-1 loss. Lester retired the first batter of the game, Jose Reyes, on a grounder. But Cabrera hit a 1-0 pitch for his eighth homer and Bautista followed with his 12th. "You never anticipate that because (Lesters) one of the best," Gibbons said. In the second, six of Torontos first seven batters reached base on five hits and a walk. Steve Tolleson and Pillar singled and moved up on a sacrifice bunt by Anthony Gose. Reyes doubled in both runners and stole second. Cabrera walked and Bautista and Edwin Encarnacion followed with RBI singles. Bautista came across when Brett Lawrie grounded into a forceout at second, making it 7-1. The inning ended when centre fielder Jackie Bradley Jr. made a diving catch on a fly ball by Dioner Navarro. Boston scored in the first on a leadoff double by Dustin Pedroia and a single by Jonny Gomes then added a run in the second on Xander Bogaerts third homer. NOTES: Toronto manager John Gibbons lost a challenge in the sixth when the on-field ruling that Pillar was caught stealing was upheld. ... Bautista has reached base in 48 of his 49 games. ... Boston has been outscored 37-16 in its seven-game losing streak, its longest since dropping its last eight games in 2012. ... The Red Sox open a three-game series against Tampa Bay on Friday night with John Lackey (5-3) facing Chris Archer (3-2) of the Rays. Toronto returns home to start a three-game set with Oakland, with Liam Hendricks (0-0) pitching against Scott Kazmir (5-1) of the Athletics. The Blue Jays called up Hendricks on Thursday from Triple-A Buffalo, where he was 5-0. R.A. Dickeys start was moved from Friday to Saturday. ' ' '

There, I saw a teenaged boy with tears in his eyes, being consoled by strength and conditioning coach Randy Lee.BEREA, Ohio - Desmond Bryant knew he had to make some major changes to his lifestyle. Really, he had no choice or there could be devastating consequences. "A heart surgery will make you kind of realize you need to start doing things right, especially diet wise," Bryant said. "Ive really cleaned things up a little bit. So far, so good." Bryants comeback from a major health scare continued Wednesday when the Browns defensive lineman returned practiced for the first time since having a procedure in December to fix an irregular heartbeat — a condition he has had for years — that led to him having his first season with Cleveland cut short. On Dec. 6, Bryant underwent a cardiac ablation, an operation that involves a catheter being inserted to destroy a small area of bad heart tissue. The 6-foot-6, 310-pounder had at least two episodes last season when his heart raced out of control, including once during an Oct. 3 game against Buffalo. Bryant was hospitalized overnight and the 29-year-old had a recurrence two months later following a home loss to Jacksonville. It was then that Bryant, who was forced to leave a 2012 game for Oakland with a fast heart rate and light-headedness, was advised to undergo the ablation. "I felt like after I experienced what I did on the field that it was finally time to do something to fix that," Bryant said. "So while it was a trying time, I was also excited to get this procedure done and put this behind me. Since then, Ive been training and feeling real well. "Im back. Im healthy." Bryant missed the first minicamp practice on Tuesday for personal reasons, but joined his teammates for their second workout, which was held inside again because of rain and wet grounds. Bryant was welcomed back by everyone, including linebacker Quentin Groves, who also had a heart ablation in 2008. Groves condition was first diagnosed when he was in college but he didnt decide to have the procedure until it was spotted again at the NFL combine. "Its kind of scary not knowing what it is," Groves said. "The way it was explained to me when I had my procedure, the doctor told me one day you could not wake up. I was like, Well, OK, if I was your son,, what would you do? He said, I would have the procedure done.dddddddddddd "Anytime someone plays with your heart, youre kind of scared." Groves spoke with Bryant before he had the operation, and joked that he had to comfort his big teammate. "Des is a big baby. I have to rock him to sleep at night. No, Im just kidding," Groves said. "I just told him, Its a fairly simple procedure. I recommend you get it done. Im proud that you got it done before it became a problem for you." Bryant wasnt anxious about the operation. He was most fearful during the episodes when his heart raced. "I would feel like I had a fast heart rate and the next thing I know I was going to the hospital," he said. "That was the only real scary thing." Bryant was one of the biggest off-season acquisitions in 2013 by the Browns, who signed him to a five-year, $34 million free agent contract. Bryant had an immediate impact, recording two sacks and a career-high 10 tackles in the opener against Miami. He was Clevelands best defensive lineman through four games, but his production fell off sharply following his hospitalization. He finished with 3 1/2 sacks in 12 games. Bryant, though, doesnt know if theres a direct correlation between his drop-off and heart ailment. Hes excited about the new defensive scheme brought in by coach Mike Pettine. "Theyve got a few wrinkles here and there that kind of switch things up that really make it challenging for offences," he said. "I cant wait to continue to grow and learn in this system and see where this will take us." Does he fit in it? "Absolutely," he said with a smile. "Im a good fit for any defence." NOTES: TE Keavon Milton worked out with the offensive linemen for the first time. The 6-foot-4, 293-pounder wore No. 63 after wearing No. 83 on Tuesday. ... After briefly considering a name change, Browns safety Donte Whitner will not drop the W and go by Hitner. "I didnt want to go through changing my credit cards, mortgages and cars," he said. "I cant do all of this paperwork. For one letter change? Id rather not." ___ AP NFL website: www.pro32.ap.org and http://twitter.com/AP_NFL ' ' '
NEW YORK -- Norichika Aoki got some good news during batting practice and turned it into a great night all-around. Aoki hit a leadoff homer, Khris Davis connected three batters later and Yovani Gallardo pitched the Milwaukee Brewers to a 4-2 victory over the New York Mets on Friday night. Before the game, Aoki found out from Japanese reporters that Brewers owner Mark Attanasio said the team will pick up the outfielders $1.5 million option for next season. "I didnt know about it until I heard today, and Im excited to be part of the Brewers again," Aoki said through a translator. "Im very thankful." Martin Maldonado also homered and Gallardo (12-10) went six innings to end his inconsistent season with a win. The right-hander, who won 33 games over the previous two years, finished 4-1 with a 2.41 ERA in eight starts since returning from a strained left hamstring. "Being on the DL for those two weeks just kind of lets you reset, kind of have a fresh start," Gallardo said. "And ever since then Ive been feeling good." The fourth-place Brewers are closing strong, too. They have won three straight and five of six, giving them nine victories in their last 10 road games against New York. "We count on Yo. Hes not a guy that I have a question mark about. So its really important for him to finish well and knowing next year, coming into the season, that were going to get the same guy that weve been used to for all these years. Somebody you can count on every time hes out there," manager Ron Roenicke said. "From when he came back off the DL, I dont have those questions anymore." Brandon Kintzler worked a 1-2-3 eighth and Jim Henderson pitched a perfect ninth for his 28th save in 32 tries. The punchless Mets played without All-Star third baseman David Wright, who sat out with a sore right thumb, and lost 4-2 to Milwaukee for the second consecutive game. Wright was sidelined one night after he was hit in the helmet by an 86 mph changeup. The Mets reiterated that Wrights head is fine -- he said he passed all the concussion tests -- but the medical staff recommended he rest his thumb for a day. The star slugger jammed his thumb when he hit the dirt after he was plunked by a pitch from Johnny Hellweg. All-Star centre fielder Carlos Gomez was back in the Brewers lineup after serving a one-game suspension for touching off a bench-clearing fracas Wednesday in Atlanta when he admired his homer and yelled at Braves starter Paul Maholm. Milwaukee third baseman Aramis Ramirez aggravated a left knee injury during the fray and has missed the last two games. Ramirez expected to take batting practice and could return this weekend, Roenicke said. Jean Segura sat out his ninth consecutive game because of a strained right hamstring, but Roenicke said the All-Star shortstop would probably be available off the bench and might start Saturday. Segura and Eric Young Jr. of the Mets are tied for the NL lead with 44 stolen bases. Aoki sent the fourth pitch from Carlos Torres (4-6) to right field for his second career leadoff homer. "He smoked it, too. That one really sounded good," Roenicke said. Scooter Gennett struck out but reached on a wild pitch. One out later, Davis drove a hanging breaking ball to left for his 11th home run. Davis grabbed at his left leg while trying to beat out an eighth-inning grounder. He came out with a tight left hamstring and strained right quadriceps. "I think hes OK. Were thinking more its, hes kind of dehydrated and didnt probably drink as much water as he should," Roenicke said. "Im hoping hell be OK tomorrow." Justin Turner knocked in a run with an infield single in the sixth to cut it to 3-2. New York had the bases loaded with one out, but Gallardo struck out Juan Lagares before Daniel Murphy tried to score from third on a pitch in the dirt. Maldonado blocked the ball in front of him and scrambled back in time to tag Murphy, who tried to hurdle the catcher at home plate. "Took a chance," Murphy said. "Its two outs, two strikes right there. Gallardos out pitch is a curveball and I was looking for a dirtball and I got one. I just didnt trust the first read and once I hesitated, I was out. Probably should have shut it down but I didnt." NOTES: Milwaukee C Jonathan Lucroy made his ninth start this season at first base. ... Infante hit a three-run homer in the sixth inning and had an RBI single in a four-run fifth against former teammate Justin Verlander, helping the Kansas City Royals beat the Tigers 11-8 Monday night. Infante became expendable in Detroit last November when the franchise traded first baseman Prince Fielder to Texas for second baseman Ian Kinsler. The next month, Infante signed a $30.25 million, four-year contract with the Royals, and their manager is glad he did. "I didnt really think much about Omar last year with the lineup that they had," Royals skipper Ned Yost acknowledged. "I would try to pitch around this guy and pitch around this guy to get to Omar, and Omar constantly just beat our brains in offensively. At about the midway point, I started realizing how really good he was." With 90-plus games left this season, the Tigers are finding out how vulnerable they are and how good Kansas City is in the tightly contested AL Central. The Royals have won a season-high eight straight to pull within a half-game of Detroit atop the division. Kansas City has won 11 of 13 since trailing the Tigers by 6 1/2 games at the start of the month. "We got on a nice little run here and weve made up some ground," Yost said. Detroit scored six runs in the ninth inning and pulled within three on J.D. Martinezs two-out grand slam off Donnie Joseph. Michael Mariot struck out Austin Jackson looking for the final out. Jason Vargas (7-2) gave up two runs on seven hits and two walks to win his third straight. Verlander (6-7) allowed seven earned runs in consecutive starts for the first time in his career, giving up a season-high 12 hits and striking out two over six innings. He got off to a good start, retiring the Royals in order on 10 pitches in the first inning, and pitched four scoreless innings before getting roughed up. The Royalls took a 4-2 lead in the fifth inning when Billy Butler followed Infantes RBI single with a three-run double off Verlander.dddddddddddd "Our confidence level is as high as it can get," Butler said. "I dont think it is as much him as it is were going really good right now." Infante cleared the left-field fences with his third homer this year with two on to make it 7-2 in the sixth, leading fans to boo Verlander, who is in the second season of his seven-year, $180 million deal. "I dont blame the fans for booing," Verlander said. "They are frustrated with me, just like Im frustrated with myself. I would have probably booed myself tonight. Theyve cheered me a lot of times, and they will cheer me again." The jeers kept coming in the next inning when Kansas City scored four runs -- one earned -- on four hits and two errors off Evan Reed, who failed to retire any Royals as their lead grew to 11-2. The Royals finished with a season high in runs and hits (17) on a steamy night in the Motor City. Detroit hurt its chances of winning the opener of the four-game series early in the game. Both teams lost a player to cramps. Tigers outfielder Torii Hunter left the game in the fourth with a cramp in his right hamstring. "Its not a strain," Detroit manager Brad Ausmus insisted. Royals catcher Salvador Perez was replaced in the seventh because of cramps in both calves. "Hes fine," Yost said. "They made him drink a bunch of fluids and gave him an IV." NOTES: Kansas City RHP Yordano Ventura (4-5) will start against Detroit RHP Max Scherzer (8-2) on Tuesday night, when the Royals will have a chance to move into first place and push the Tigers to second in the division for the first time this season. ... Kansas Citys winning streak is the longest active streak in the majors and its best since winning nine in a row from July 22 to Aug. 1 last year. ' ' '
TRIESTE, Italy -- Nairo Quintana showed why hes considered as cyclings next star by winning the Giro dItalia on Sunday to follow his runner-up finish in last years Tour de France. The 24-year-old climbing specialist with the Movistar team won two stages and finished with a 2 minute, 58 second advantage over fellow Colombian Rigoberto Uran for his first Grand Tour victory. "Its really emotional," Quintana said. "I didnt think there would be so many Colombians here today. It was incredible seeing how much support and how many banners there were." One such banner held aloft during the podium celebration with the Colombian flag on it read, "The Giro is ours. Gracias muchachos." Fabio Aru, a 23-year-old Italian who is also considered a top rider for the future, finished third overall, 4:04 back. Quintana took the pink jersey by winning the grueling 16th stage over the Gavia and Stelvio climbs then also took the 19th leg, a mountain time trial. Quintana finished second to Chris Froome in last years Tour. While he isnt planning to enter the French race this year, he has designs on winning it next year. "We need to look at our plans carefully," Quintana said. Slovenias Luca Mezgec won the final stage in a mass sprint. The Giant-Shimano rider clocked 4 hours, 23 minutes, 58 seconds over the mostly flat 172-kilometre (107-mile) leg from Gemona del Friuli to Trieste, which concluded with eight laps of a city circuit. "It couldnt be a better day than this. Were close to Slovenia," Mezgec said. Giacomo Nizzolo of Italy finished second and Tyler Farrar of the United States was third, both with the same time as Mezgec. Dressed entirely in pink, Quintana finished safely in the middle of the pack and pumped his fist as he crossed the line then hugged his teammates when he got off his bike. "I can finally say Ive won the Giro," Quintana said. "I have to thank my teammates and my family here supporting me." During the playing of the Colombian anthem, Quintana held his pink-clad daughter Mariana, who was born in February. Quintana faced controversy after the 16th stage, in which he attacked on the descent from the Stelvio then powered up the final climb in the lead. There had been some confusion over whether the descent on a wet road was going to be neutralized but race officials declared afterward that his victory was legitimate. Quintana is the first Colombian to win the race -- and with Uran, it was a sweep of the top two spots. Another Colombian, Julian Arredondo, won the mountains classification. Colombia President Juan Manuel Santos travelled to Quintanas hometown of Combita to watch the final stage with dozens of friends and neighbours of the cyclist, who was raised in the high Andean town of 16,000 by a family of peasant farmers. Dressed in the pink colour of the tour leaders jersey and surrounded by fans holding signs like "Nairo: all of Colombia loves and thanks you," Santos said the Quintanas victory was an inspiration to millions of Colombians. TORONTO - When Matt Black was a 16-year-old playing in the Ontario Varsity Football League, younger brother Eric was the teams water boy. Thats as close as the Blacks — separated by six years — have come to playing together, until now. The Toronto Argonauts selected Eric with the 38th overall pick in Tuesday nights CFL draft, six years after they drafted Matt — the latest and most exciting chapter in the siblings story. "It was crazy. Its hard to talk about it," Eric said Wednesday. "Its something Ive been working for and dreaming about since I watched my brother do it. And to get drafted to any team, let alone my hometown, with my brother, its just a team come true." Eric, 23, and 29-year-old Matt met with the media at the Argonauts downtown office on Wednesday, their first duty together as teammates. Matt helped Eric thread a television mic down his shirt, joking "He cant even dress himself." The brothers were following the draft together their parents Toronto home when Erics name came up alongside the Argos. Their mom Marlane cried. Dad Donovan said: "Its time to get to work." "I leapt up. . . Im staying home, Im staying home," Eric said. The brothers, who both attended Torontos Northern Secondary School, grew up playing numerous sports — baseball, soccer, rugby, track and field. They took different paths to the CFL. Matt, a 5-10 safety who was taken 45th overall by the Argos in 2008, played college ball at Saginaw Valley State. Eric, a defensive back whos a couple inches taller than his older brother, played in the CIS at St. Marys University. But Matt has been instrumental in Erics development, the younger brother said. "Id watch him do everything and try to emulate him, and hes set a good path for me," Eric said. "To have my older brother, whos been teaching me how to handle myself in life and on the field, be on the same team as me, its great." Matt wiped away a tear as Eric spoke to reporters. "Ive always wanted to have that opportunity (to play together)," Matt said. "He was always just a year away from playing with me or two years away from playing with me. So its always been close but no cigar. Now the fact that were going to get to suit up for the Argos, I think the only person happier than me is my mom. Its an awesome dream come true. "Hes worked so hard for this opportunity, hes done everything he needed to do and thats what makes me so proud of him, how hard hes worked." Matt began his Argos career on special teams, but persevered to become a solid safety with the team. Eric hopes to do the same. "Matt is the grind story, what a lot of Canadians wish to be, they start off on special teams, might not get to start right away, but you work your way up, you cut your teeth and now hes a vet, a contributing member on this team," Eric said. Any good feelings between siblings will be put aside during Argos rookie initiations, the brothers said laughing. "I dont think hes going to spare me the rod at all," Eric said. Added Matt: "If anything, his spears going to be sharper than everyone elses. Hes going to get it worse. Ill definitely be calling him up to sing at rookie camp nice and early, so hed better have a good song. If it sucks, hes going again." Argonauts GM Jim Barker said the club knows its getting a solid person in Eric. "You know a little more about him because Matt is such a quality person in the community, hes the kind of guy you want to have in your organization," Barker said. "You know coming from that family, hes going to be similar. Those kinds of things help. Eric we know really well because of Matt, and that helped making the pick." Barker added with a laugh that Matt was down at the Argos office on Tuesday afternoon "politicking" for Eric. He believes the younger brother will be on a faster track to adjusting to the team, "just because hes going to have Matt whos telling him things that he sees that hes doing that he can do better. "Matt is a veteran guy, one of the most veteran guys we have, so obviously that helps Eric. But hes going to have to produce on the field, and hes going to have to be the best guy for this team in order to be a guy who sticks." Barker said the team was pleased with the eight players it acquired in a draft that saw five first-round trades as well as another involving an early second-round selection. "It was just such a bizarre draft, it was one like none Ive ever been in," Barker said. "There was no telling what was going to happen." The Argos kicked off the first round with a trade that saw them land running back Anthony Coombs (Manitoba Bisons) third overall. "We were very excited, we had obviously the guy we wanted out the draft the most was Anthony Coombs, and we were able to trade up and get him," Barker said. The Argos went on to select Jas Dhillon, a 6-3, 300-pound offensive lineman UBC, Thomas Miles, a linebacker from the Manitoba Bisons, University of Montreal running back Alexandre Dupuis, Evan Pszczonak, a wide receiver out of the University of Windsor, Tore Corrado, a wide receiver from Simon Fraser University, and Acadia defensive lineman Kirby Fletcher. In its final preseason matchup, the Montreal Impact concluded the Walt Disney World Pro Classic with a 1-1 draw against the Philadelphia Union, Saturday afternoon, at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex. The final ranking of the tournament was then decided on penalties. The Union opened the scoring in the 29th minute when forward Jack McInerney brought in a long ball behind the Impact defence, just inside the box. Alone in front of Troy Perkins, McInerney beat the goalkeeper with a low shot to the right of goal. The Impact tied with an identical goal at the 80th minute, when striker Marco Di Vaio also found himself alone with goalkeeper Zach MacMath. The Designated Player didnt miss his target, beating MacMath with a lot show to the far post. The Impact got an excellent scoring chance in the first half. In the 39th minute, midfielder Justin Mapp played a cross from the right of goal to Andrew Wenger, but is header was stopped by a diving MacMath. The team ends camp with two wins (Orlando City 2-1 and Fluminense 1-0), two losses (New York 3-0 and Kansas City 3-2) and one draw (Philadelphia 1-1). "It was a good for us to come from behind today. The penalties dont really matter," said Troy Perkins. "The team showed character and its a good step for the group going forward. Personally, it was good for me to be able to play a game after nursing an injury the past few days." Gareth Wheeler of TSN Radio 1050 Toronto offers his Midweek Musings for Match-day 24 in the Barclays Premier League. - Chelseas 1-0 win at the Etihad, spoiling Manchester Citys perfect home record continues to be the talking point of the week. Chelseas prudent defensive record and approach under Jose Mourinho always makes them a contender in all competitions. Tactically, the Portuguese is among the finest managers in the game. His public demeanour remains all over the place, providing fodder for argument. Despite sitting only two points back of Arsenal atop the table and having an easier schedule the rest of the way, Mourinho continues to downplay Chelseas title chances. Assessing the title race, Mourinho explains, "Two horses (Arsenal, Man City) and a little horse (Chelsea) that still needs milk and to learn how to jump. A horse that next season can race." Not sure if were getting the straight goods, straight from the horses mouth. Yes, Chelsea is a team in transformation as Mourinho finds players to ideally play his way. Add a striker and another centre-back for next season, and add the injured Marco van Ginkel into the fray, Chelsea promises to be scary good next season. That being said, Mourinho suggesting Chelsea is on the outside looking in is a fallacy. Mourinho cant believe it to be true. A trip to Anfield is as difficult as it gets away from Stamford Bridge. And his team is undefeated in their last 10. In this analysts eye, Chelsea are favourite to win the league. Downplaying Chelseas chances is an alternative type of psychological warfare. Sir Alex Fergusons Manchester United, who dominated the Premier League for the better part of the last two decades, were always full of belief, publicly and privately stating their intent in the title race. Its shocking Mourinho is using this tact when he has a team of millionaire superstars at his disposal. No matter what he says, Mourinho isnt fooling anyone. At the very least, it keeps things interesting. - City was down two key players in Mondays loss. Centre-midfielder Fernandhino and top striker Sergio Aguero missed the all-important occasion through injury. While Fernandhinos steady approach was missed, it paled in comparison to the void left by Aguero. While Citys other forwards are of high quality, they lack the same game-breaking ability of Aguero. 15 league goals in 15 games is an astounding record. A constant danger inside the box and lethal on his right foot, City lacked the Argentines cutting edge against a team difficult to penetrate. Its no coincidence David Silva is at his best with Aguero on the field. The movement off the ball makes the duo as difficult a combination to play against as any in world football. Matches against Chelsea in the FA Cup and Barcelona in the Champions League in the next two weeks, potentially without Aguero, raises true questions of whether City can truly compete in all four competitions. Aguero is that important. - As Mourinho continues to make a near seamless transition back into English football, David Moyes struggles at Manchester United remain. A 2-1 loss against lowly Stoke City, a team having picked up just one point in their previous six, compounds his problems. Moyes has made 83 changes to his starting XI in league games, 11 more than any other manager in the Premier League. Injuries have been an issue here, but no excuse for such poor form. The lack of involvement and interplay between attacking players was ultimately most disturbing at the Britannia. Michael Carrick being forced to centre-back is one thing, but the attacking players going MIA speaks to Moyes team approach lacking inspiration. Where are the fresh ideas? What is his teams identity? These questions cant be answered. And that is a failure. United are playing an unimaginative, passive, unaware brand of football. One has to wonder if a manager of alternate stature would be faring better at present time with this team. What if Mourinho was at Manchester United? Its difficult to think this same team would be in seventh place under the Portuguese leadership. Its a valid question to ask, as it seemed all along Mourinho wanted the Old Trafford job. And in his autobiography, Sir Alex Ferguson was full of praise of Mourinho and his managerial ability. Ferguson may have seen some of himself in Moyes. But did United need another Ferguson? Better question: can another Ferguson be cultivated in the present day climate? Moyes isnt going anywhere, for now. But its legitimate to question whether Ferguson picked the right successor for a new Manchester United. - Arsenal may be the most under-respected among title contenders. There has been a remarkable consistency in the side. The attacking flair and superior passing remains, even without Theo Walcott and Aaron Ramsey. The development of the centre-back partnership between Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker has been essential to the exceptional form. The spine of the team is arguably the strongest in the league, led by the duo. Arsenal remain undefeated since January 2012, a stretch of 31 games with Koscielny and Mertesacker both in the starting XI. The next two games are massive for Arsenal and potential title hopes. Back-to-back games at Liverpool and home to Manchester United are true tests. Full points would be a giant step towards ending their 10-year title drought. It would also silence the critics wondering where the January striker signing ended up. - The true importance of a manager will be tested now that Michael Laudrup has been sacked by Swansea City. Laudrup helped build on the accomplishments of Brendan Rodgers at the Welsh club, leading Swansea to their first major silverware in the clubs history and venturing into the previous unchartered territory of the Europa League. Injuries have decimated the team, with last years star player Michu a long-term absentee. The midfield has been torn apart, and the failure to bring back Ki-Sung Yueng off loan from Sunderland raised eyebrows. A vacation to Paris, dressing room turmoil, an uncertain future, and six points from their last 10 matches all contributed to his sacking. Fact remains Swansea have completed almost 600 more passes than any team in the league and still have the top pass accuracy. The stylish football is no fluke. Its progressive and refreshing. Credit Laudrup. With the short-term hiring of Garry Monk, the club is apparently choosing stability over style. A risk, not worth taking. It will be determined in short order the importance of style vs. stability. Id choose Laudrup. Now a relegation fight beckons under the veil of the great unknown. Good luck with that. - The Sunderland climb off the bottom continued with an emphatic 3-0 away derby win over Newcastle. Gus Poyets side is flying, with true competition for places in the side, and a good combination of strength and skill. As for Newcastle, its all gone pear-shaped. The loss of Yohan Cabaye was the first blow. Being without top goal scorer Loic Remy, suspended for three was the clincher. An in-form Remy and consistency from Hatem Ben Arfa will be essential to staying in the top half of the table. Some good news for Newcastle, the teams latest embarrassment, director of football Joe Kinnear has mercifully stepped aside, putting an end to experiment gone wrong from the get-go. Kinnear said hed be judged in the transfer window; he didnt sign one player last summer or in January. He did however state potential transfer interest in a player already at the club during a radio interview. An absolute nightmare. Alan Pardew now solely has to deal with the bad dreams. His team is a mess, again. - West Hams co-owner David Gold is threatening legal action over Andy Carrolls red against Swansea City. Carroll swung recklessly, albeit not making much contact, after challenging for an aerial ball with Chico Flores. Its difficult to judge intent, and if there was, it should always be an automatic sending off. Carroll now faces a three-match ban. Most troubling, West Ham believes Carrolls suspension could make-or-break the Hammers in their relegation fight. Scary thought. Carroll was involved in both West Ham goals last week, but has been an absolute nightmare in front of goal. His performances have been abysmal. And the player often looks lost. If West Ham is relying upon Carroll as saviour, they may as well already punch their ticket to the League Championship. Not good enough. The Heat defeated the Toronto Marlies 6-3 Sunday night in American Hockey League action, which ties a franchise record for consecutive victories. The streak has included overtime, shootouts, comebacks, and on Sunday, a blown lead in the third period. "We look back at each game and know where we havent done so well in certain areas, and known that weve been lucky to win some in this streak as well," said Brett Olson, who scored the winning goal. "Were happy with where were at. But weve just got to keep it all in perspective and learn from each game, and maintain that confidence that when we get in tight situations like this, that we can win." After the Marlies rallied from a two-goal deficit to tie the game 3-3 in the third Olson converted a pass from Knight off a Tyler Wotherspoon rush while playing four-on-four at 12:21 of the third period. "Spooner made an unbelievable rush," said Olson of the rookie defenceman Wotherspoon. "He bought time and basically sucked the guy in and was able to kick it out to Knight. Knight fed it through a nice little hole, and I didnt have to do much, to be honest with you. It was right on my tape, and I just had to put it in the open net." It was just the second goal of the year for Olson but a coachs hunch matched him with the Heats leading scorer on that shift. "The big things is, they can get up and down the rink together and they both can share the puck pretty well," said Abbotsford head coach Troy Ward. "Theyve had some chemistry so it was kind of a gut feeling." Knight added a goal and Michael Ferland also had a goal and an assist for the Heat (11-4-1), while Chad Billins, Ben Street and Markus Granlund scored the others. "That was like a playoff-atmosphere game, for the most part," said Olson. "There were a lot of hits, there was a lot of hard work to the net, a lot of puck battles on the walls, just great plays overall." Joey MacDonald made 24 saves for Abbotsford and his most important may have been with four minutes to go when he came across to glove a T.J. Brennan slap shot, a quality save even the Toronto defenceman had to acknowledge with a stick tap.dddddddddddd Josh Leivo, Trevor Smith and Jerry DAmigo scored for the Marlies (6-5-1) while Spencer Abbott chipped in with two assists to extend his point streak to 11 games. Garret Sparks stopped 24 shots for Toronto. Leivo opened the scoring for the Marlies at 8:09 when he took a pass at full speed from Abbott and made a move around a defenceman to beat MacDonald through the five-hole. The Heat tied the game at 17:46 when Greg Nemisz blazed down the right wing and threw a puck to the net. Sparks couldnt corral it and, with Nemisz in the crease, Billins raced in to wrist it past the Marlies netminder for his team-leading sixth goal of the season. The Heat took the lead at 5:02 when Street converted a two-on-one rush with Ferland and Knight made it 3-1 two minutes and 31 seconds later. Ben Hanowski fed the puck to Knight in the high slot as Olson went to the net to provide traffic and Knight placed a hard wrist shot from the top of the circle past Sparks. Toronto cut into the deficit while on a five-on-three power play. Abbott found Smith open at the side of the net and the Marlies captain one-timed it past MacDonald at 11:49. The Marlies tied the game at 6:10 of the third period when DAmigo put one past MacDonald. After blocking a shot at his own blue line, Sam Carrick rushed down the ice and tried to centre for David Broll. The puck found its way to DAmigo at the side of the net with MacDonald sprawled. "They pushed pretty hard and we took a lot of penalties in a row," said Ward. "They scored a nice five-on-three goal. We seemed to be a little bit on edge. Theyre a good hockey team. We would expect that from them. Its 3-1 and with a couple of mistakes its 3-3." Despite giving up a two-goal cushion, the team didnt get flustered, going on to score three more times, including a penalty shot by Granlund and an empty netter by Ferland. The Heat now head on their longest road trip of the season. "Its going to be a long one," said Billins. "But you know, its fun too. Its a good time to really build up the team bonding. Its going to be a battle, but youve just got to take it one game at a time. Weve got to pull off some wins here." ' ' '
TORONTO - Bryan Murray postponed his chemotherapy treatment to attend an NHL meeting Tuesday, another sign the Ottawa Senators general manager is continuing to do his job while battling Stage 4 colon cancer. Murray has lost more than 40 pounds and doctors have told him there is no cure. Despite his health issues, the 71-year-old was in good spirits at the leagues general managers meeting. Some days a little tired, but other than that I feel fine, Murray said as he held court with reporters for almost 10 minutes. Its always good to come to meetings and be involved and see whats happening in the world of our game. I hope to continue in that for a long time. The Senators announced over the summer that Murray had been diagnosed with cancer and was beginning treatment immediately. In a televised interview last week, Murray revealed the severity of his illness, which doctors say he was living with for seven to 10 years and has spread to his liver and lung. Murray said he did the interview only to reinforce how important it is to get a colonoscopy, which could have caught his cancer earlier. In his own life, Murray has already noticed an impact. Ive had some former players call me that played for me years ago that hadnt had any kind of medical attention to that area, he said. A nurse told me last night that four or five people at one of the clinics in Ottawa sent in and said because of the interview theyre kind of smart enough now to step up and get themselves examined. I hope and feel that its the right message and a good message and its worthwhile. Tim Murray, Bryans nephew, his former assistant GM in Ottawa and now the GM of the Buffalo Sabres, said last week he scheduled a colonoscopy. Beyond the awareness issue, Murray is putting on a brave face. We live our lives, Murray said. I go to the hospital, I see young people, young mothers and young children and if I cant be strong and brave, how can they be? I think that thats also a message that I am what I am, it is the way it is right now and theres no sense in hiding it. Murray will have chemotherapy Wednesday. He said doctors have been good to let him almost self-schedule appointments around his work with the Senators. Assistant GMs Pierre Dorion and Randy Lee have been doing more travelling and scouting to help Murray out, but the longtime hockey man doesnt want to leave his duties because he has cancer. Im old enough to retire, my wife has told me that for the last four or five years, and shes right, Murray said. To be involved and active, I think is important, and for me to go home and sit on the couch doesnt make a lot of sense to me, so Im not going to do that. Eugene (Melnyk) has been very strong and involved with me and anything and everything as normal. I think that thats the way I want to operate right now. Murray hopes to operate like this as long as possible. Even while discussing his health, he made sure to bring the conversation to the Senators and their performance on the ice, now and in the future. This is not the end of anything other than we hope that we win some games in Ottawa this year and get some recognition come playoff time that were a contending team, Murray said. Murray is signed through the 2015-16 season after getting an extension in January. But hes not ready to think about next season. Thats depending on how it goes here and how I feel, Murray said. I think that theres a time when Ill retire, but I see a lot of young guys coming up in our organization and Id like to be around as they play better and better and grow up. Murrays colleagues were glad to see him at Tuesdays meeting but didnt make any point to recognize it. He was one of 30 GMs in the room, as always. Bryan was terrific today, his participation today was no different than its ever been, Lou Lamoriello of the New Jersey Devils said. Stan Bowman of the Chicago Blackhawks, who had Hodgkins lymphoma seven years ago, said its important to stay positive. We all support him, Bowman said. Whether its personal or friends or family, its one of the universal things in life and you have to battle through it. Murray said hockey colleagues have been very supportive. Sometimes I feel guilty I cant respond to them all as quickly as Id like to, Murray said. I try to do that and I will try to continue to do that. --- Follow @SWhyno on Twitter Yeezy 700 v2 Online . Kerry wants to answer your emails at cmonref@tsn.ca. Hey Kerry, Im a huge fan of your responses and perspective in the game. Im also a huge Rangers fan. I was watching the Kings/Rangers game on Thursday. With around eight minutes left in the third period, the Rangers were in the Kings zone attacking. Dan Boyle took a shot from the point and broke his stick. Subsequently, the kings ended up with a break (3-on-2) going the other way. Boyle was looking for help and teammate Dominic Moore lofted his stick in Boyles direction. Boyle initially looked for the stick, but then had second thoughts and batted it away. The thought is that there would have been a penalty if Boyle had received the stick. Is this correct? And if so, should there not have been a penalty on Moore for throwing his stick in the first place? Thanks, Rob Ollerton, Fort McMurray --- Rob: Thank you very much for your loyal following of CMon Ref. I trust all is well in Ft. McMurray and hope that you are staying warm this time of year skating on the outdoor rinks? Dan Boyle could have caught the stick that was thrown to him and participated in the play without personally incurring a minor penalty under the rules even though he technically received the stick illegally. Had Boyle done so however, it would have drawn significantly more attention to teammate T. J. Miller (not Dominic Moore) for the illegal action of throwing a stick to a teammate punishable by a minor penalty. In fairness to the NHL referee community there is some vagueness in the understanding and interpretation of the rules as they affect this specific play? The situation handbook only makes reference to incidents where a player receives the stick illegally and plays with it, which Boyle refused to do. Rule 10.3 tells us that, A player who has lost or broken his stick may only receive a stick at his own players bench or be handed one from a teammate on the ice. A player will be penalized if he throws, tosses, slides or shoots a stick to a teammate on the ice. The same application is enforced when a player throws or slides a replacement stick to a goalkeeper. The goalie does not receive a penalty but the player is assessed a minor penalty for throwing the stick. A consistency is further created within the rule for determining the guilty party should a stick be thrown from off the playing surface by stating, A player tendered a stick thrown on the ice from the players or penalty bench will not receive a penalty. However, the person responsible for throwing the stick will receive a bench minor penalty. While the above references provide the assumption that the player picks up thhe illegally acquired stick, it is important to note that a bench minor penalty would be warranted and should be assessed as per Rule 53.dddddddddddd.3 (Throwing Equipment) regardless as to whether the stick is picked and played with up or not. On the surface it might appear that the primary intent of rule 10 is so that a player who has broken his stick does not gain an advantage to defend (territorially) when a stick is airmailed to him on the ice by a teammate. While that is in part correct, the larger issue concerns safety of players when sticks are being thrown about, in addition to potential interference violations that can restrict the flow of play. Rule 53 clearly states that a player shall not throw a stick or any other object in any zone and a minor penalty shall be imposed on any player on the ice who throws his stick or any part thereof or any other object in the direction of the puck or an opponent in any zone, except when such act has been penalized by the assessment of a penalty shot or the awarding of a goal. Even though the stick was thrown to a teammate (Boyle) it shortly thereafter interfered to some degree with Marian Gaboriks skates as the Kings player attacked the net in search of a cross-ice pass. An immediate and clear decision has to be made by the Officiating and Hockey Operations Departments as to how they want their referees to interpret the current rules when a player throws, tosses, slides or shoots a stick to a teammate on the ice when the stick is not picked up. The jury is split on this at the present time. Dan Boyle had the option to catch and play with stick which he would have acquired in an illegal manner without ever receiving a penalty under the rules. The onus and penalty is therefore placed upon a teammate that distributes the stick in an illegal fashion. It was a pretty heads up play by Boyle to forgo Millers offering. The decision worked to the NY Rangers advantage this time around. Personally, I can handle a non-call on a player that slides or shoots a stick in the direction of a player who has lost or broken his stick so long as it is not picked up and played with and the resulting action does not interfere with the movements of the puck or attacking players. Broken sticks and loose equipment are discarded and moved out of the way of play without recourse on a consistent basis. However, based on the intent, spirit and language of Rule 53 designed to deter players from throwing sticks and other objects through the air I would suggest that in the future, players should receive a minor penalty for throwing a stick regardless of the intended recipient or whether the stick is caught or played with. Will keep you posted when a final determination has been made. ' ' '

(SportsNetwork.com) - For one night the Miami Heat proved they can win without LeBron James and theyll go for another 2-0 start Saturday with a visit to Philadelphia. The Heat handed the Washington Wizards a 107-95 setback Wednesday in South Beach, as Chris Bosh muscled his way to 26 points and 15 rebounds. Bosh made nine of his 18 attempts from the floor for Miami, which made 48.1 percent for the game and received a career high 23 points from Norris Cole. Its one game. We need to stay focused on what we need to do as a team and individually, said Bosh, who scored 16 points in the second quarter and signed a five-year $118 million deal in the offseason to remain in Miami. The US Court of Appeal has reinstated the four-game Deflategate suspension of New England Patriots superstar quarterback Tom Brady. Brady is alleged to have used under-inflated balls before an NFL play-off game last year. The 2nd US Circuit Court of Appeals in New York reversed a federal judges ruling from September. The appeals court ruled that in imposing the suspension, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell properly exercised his discretion under a collective bargaining agreement. Bradys ban has been reinstated following an NFL investigation The split decision by a three-judge panel may end the legal debate over the scandal that led to months of football fans arguing over air pressure and the reputation of one of the leagues top teams. It is also likely to fuel a fresh round of debate over what role, if any, the quarterback and top NFL star played in using under-inflated footballs at the AFC Championship Game in January 2015. The Patriots won the contest over the Indianapolis Colts, 45-7, and then won the Super Bowl. Brady went on to win the Superbowl with the Patriots The appeals ruling follows a September decision by Manhattan Judge Richard Berman that went against the league, letting Brady skip the suspension. The three-judge panel sided 2-1 with the NFL, saying the leagues discipline was properly grounded in the collective bargaining agreement and Brady was treated fairly. Chief Judge Robert Katzmann dissented.I am troubled by the Commissioners decision to uphold the unprecedented four-game suspension, Katzmann said. The Commissioner failed to even consider a highly relevant alternative penalty. And the NFL Players Association released a statement which read: The NFLPA is disappointed in the decision by the second circuit. We fought Roger Goodells suspension of Tom Brady because we know he did not serve as a fair arbitrator and that players rights were violated under our collective bargaining agreement. Our union will carefully review the decision, consider all of our options, and continue to fight for players rights and for the integrity of the game. Albrecht, who became a household name when he scored 17 first-half points against Louisville in the National Championship game two years ago, broke a 63-63 deadlock when he stepped into an NBA range 3-pointer with 31 seconds to play. Its really hard to go to one person against that zone, said Michigan head coach John Beilein. We tried to get an action that would allow us to get a ball screen ... somebody was going to have to make a big shot, but it was a very simple scheme that worked for us. Michael Gbinije got a quick two at the other end, and Syracuse (5-2) had two chances to take a lead after Michigan missed two free throws but squandered both. Chris McCullough, who secured Derrick Waltons miss from the line, overthrew Kaleb Joseph on his outlet pass. LeVert then missed the front end of a 1-and-1, but Joseph lost the ball on a drive to the basket. LeVert sank two with 4.5 to play, and Josephs final look from 3 hit nothing but air as the clock expired. Zak Irvin led Michigan (6-1) with 18 points while LeVert and Ricky Doyle scored 12 apiece. The Wolverines improved to 5-0 at home this season. Trevor Cooney and Rakeem Christmas had 16 and 15 points, respectively, in the setback. McCullough finished with 10 points and 12 rebounds. Michigan started 0-for-7 from the floor before Kameron Chatman finally hit a jumper from the free throw line. That bucket sparked a 9-0 Wolverines run, with Irvin canning a 33 and throwing down a dunk in transition during the spurt.dddddddddddd Gbinije then capped an 8-0 Orange run with a three-point play. It was 12-9 at that point, and neither team led by more than three during the rest of a back- and-forth first half. Christmas followed another Irvin dunk with a three-point play at the other end, and Syracuse led 31-29 at halftime. It was a tale of two halves for Michigans outside shooting. The Maize and Blue struggled to find the range in the opening 20 minutes, shooting just 3- for-17 from the arc before erupting for 8-of-16 in the second half. Albrecht came alive early in the second half. He had a hand in 12 straight points for the Wolverines. The junior hit a 3, assisted on triples by Walton and Irvin, and went behind the back to set up Doyles three-point play. Cooney hit a pair of treys during that run to keep Syracuse close. We made some adjustments at the half and we played much better the second half, Albrecht said. Albrecht then potted another long 3-pointer and assisted on two more baskets, including Irvins fourth 3 of the game, and the Wolverines went up 58-48 with seven minutes to play. Syracuse used an 11-3 run from there to close the gap to two. Cooney hit twice from behind the arc and McCullough scored four points during the spurt that forced Michigan to use a timeout. With 56 seconds remaining, Christmas tied the game with an uncontested layup. Game Notes Walton returned after missing one game with a toe injury ... Syracuse had 19 turnovers compared to just seven from Michigan ... Chatman had 10 points and a career-best nine rebounds. ' ' '

GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- Michael Frazier II scored 14 points, highly touted freshman Chris Walker had two crowd-pleasing dunks in his debut and No. 3 Florida beat Missouri 68-58 on Tuesday night. The Gators won their 14th consecutive game and extended a school record with their 28th straight victory at home. Frazier came up huge in the latest one. The sophomore drained three 3-pointers in a 2-minute span in the second half, giving Florida some breathing room in a tight, back-and-forth game. Patric Youngs driving layup with 4:10 remaining gave the Gators (20-2, 9-0 Southeastern Conference) a 58-48 lead. Missouris 3-point shooting kept the Tigers (16-6, 4-5) in it for much of the game. Missouri made 8 of 21 from behind the arc, but just 4 of 13 in the second half. The Tigers went more than 4 minutes without a point, a stretch that helped Florida build its biggest lead. Jabari Brown led the Tigers with 15 points while Jordan Clarkson added 14. Scottie Wilbekin finished with a career-high 19 points for the Gators. He was 13 of 16 from the free throw line, most of them down the stretch. Young chipped in 13 points and six rebounds. Florida coach Billy Donovan notched his 16th consecutive 20-win season. Only Syracuses Jim Boeheim and Dukes Mike Krzyzewski have longer active streaks. Donovans current team has some issues -- shaky free throw shooting and few long-range threats outside Frazier -- but the addition of Walker could increase Floridas chances of making another deep run in the NCAA tournament. A forward from Bonifay in Floridas panhandle, Walker sat out 12 games, or 40 per cent of the season, because the NCAA determined he "received preferential treatment from five people, including two agents." The NCAA said Walker and people close to him accepted free cellphones and service, airfare, lodging, meals and apparel while he was a prospect. He was ordered to donate the $270 received from the agents to a charity of his choice and serve 80 hours of community service. Walker, who failed to qualify academically and spent the fall taking online classes to gain eligibility, joined the team Dec. 14 and has been practicing since. His debut had been much-anticipated. Walker, who drew oohs and aahs with every move during pregame warm-ups, entered the game to a standing ovation with 11:28 remaining in the first half. His first few minutes on the court gave Florida fans even more to celebrate. Walker blocked two shots and pulled down a rebound in just 3 minutes. There was some obvious confusion, especially on the defensive end, but he showed surprising poise considering all the hype, the wait, the atmosphere and the opponent. He was even better in his second stint. Walker had two thunderous dunks in the final 2:07 of the half, finishing alley-oops from fellow freshman Kasey Hill. Now he just needs to make that translate to the regular season as well.Joensuu had a pair of goals as the Oilers managed a 3-2 victory over the Arizona Coyotes in pre-season play on Wednesday.I think our whole line played really well, it was a line effort, both goals, Joensuu said. Either they were really, really good or they werent defending me really well. They were both really similar. The 26-year-old Finnish forward scored three goals in exhibition play last year before recording just three goals and five points in 42 games in the regular season. Those numbers put him on the bubble for a spot with the team this year.Im not that good that I dont have to play well in training camp, he said.Benoit Pouliot also scored for the Oilers, who improved to 4-2-0 in exhibition action. It was one of those nights where we didnt have very many complaints, said Oilers head coach Dallas Eakins. All the guys in the lineup showed very well. The pace was there, the execution was there, the hiccups along the way were few and far between.Mikkel Boedker and Rob Klinkhammer replied for the Coyotes, who dropped to 4-1-2.I didnt think we played as well tonight as we did the other night in Vancouver, said Coyotes coach Dave Tippett. We were taking a last look at five or six young players who were pushing for lineup spots. We didnt win enough battles and our execution with the puck was poor at times and got us in some trouble. The game was a bit of a surreal experience for Arizona goalie Devan Dubnyk, who looks like a lock for the backup goalie job in Arizona after a tumultuous season last year that saw him unsuccessfully begin the year as the Oilers starter, get traded to Nashville and then to Montreal, where he ended the season with the Habs AHL squad in Hamilton.I saw a lot of pucks in the first, which helped me forget about the strangeness of the situation, said Dubnyk, who made 30 saves on the night. I felt weird for the first couple minutes, but that was it. I didnt let myself build it up too much and was able to enjoy it. I tried to just treat this as another game. It was definitely nice to get it out of the way and Ill definitely work hard to get the two points next time when it matters.Arizona started the scoring midway through the first period when Oilers starter Ben Scrivens made the stop on a point shot by Connor Murphy, but got caught up in traffic in front of the net for the rebound a€”” allowing Boedker to lift the puck into the net.ddddddddddddScrivens almost got caught off guard for a second goal with two minutes left in the opening period when he missed on a poke check attempt on Tobias Rieder. He was able to recover, however, to make a diving save and then another stop on Rieder on the doorstep seconds later. They turned out to be big stops as the Oilers then skated up-ice on a rush. Dubnyk was able to make the initial stop on a shot by Teddy Purcell, but was unable to prevent Pouliot from lifting in the rebound to make it 1-1.The Oilers had another great opportunity with 25 seconds remaining as Brandon Gormley hooked Matt Hendricks on a breakaway, leading to a penalty shot. However, Dubnyk easily made the save on the one-on-one encounter.Edmonton outshot Arizona 17-8 through 20 minutes. The Oilers took a 2-1 lead two minutes into the second period after Steve Pinizzotto slid a puck in front and Joensuu was able to put a quick snap shot through Dubnyks legs.Edmonton had a bit of a scare when forward David Perron was crushed in a mid-ice hit by Arizona defender Matt Smaby and had trouble getting up. After heading down the ramp, Perron would return a few minutes later and finished the second, but did not come back for the third with a rib injury. The Coyotes tied the game with eight minutes remaining in the second when Klinkhammer elected to shoot on a two-on-one break, beating Scrivens with a well-placed shot to the top corner.Edmonton came close to regaining the lead with just over five minutes left in the second period when Darnell Nurse rang a shot off the post on the power play. The Oilers made it 3-2 early in the third when Pinizzotto took the puck behind the net and fed it into the slot for Joensuu, who zipped the puck past Dubnyk. The Oilers continue the pre-season schedule on Thursday night as they host the Vancouver Canucks. The Coyotes play their final exhibition match-up on Friday when they host the San Jose Sharks.Notes a€” Edmonton fans were denied the chance to see former Oilers forward Sam Gagner play for the Coyotes. Gagner was traded in the off-season to Tampa Bay for Teddy Purcell, and then flipped the same day to Arizona. Purcell played his first game as an Oiler in Edmontona€| Forward Justin Hodgman has been making a very good case for himself with the Coyotes after spending last season in the KHL. NEW YORK -- J.J. Hardy finally got in on the fun Saturday, against a likely opponent. Nelson Cruz has been hitting homers all season. Cruz hit his 23rd home run, Hardy connected for his first of the year and the Baltimore Orioles beat the New York Yankees 6-1 after starter Bud Norris left with tightness in his right groin. Adam Jones and Steve Pearce also went deep off struggling soft-tosser Vidal Nuno, helping the Orioles rebound after blowing a two-run lead in the ninth inning of a 5-3 loss Friday night. "Big win for us," Hardy said. Cruz and Pearce each had a two-run shot. Hardy ended a drought of 339 at-bats that dated to last September. "It definitely felt nice," he said. "I felt like I forgot how to do it." "I think it probably is a little bit of a relief. I started to question myself if I ever was going to hit one again," Hardy added. Mark Teixeira hit his 12th home run for the Yankees, who had won four straight and eight of 10, but that was all they managed against Norris and three relievers. During a pregame ceremony on the field, former New York first baseman Tino Martinez was honoured with a plaque to be placed in Monument Park. Making his first start against the Yankees, Norris (7-5) allowed three hits in five innings and matched a career high by winning his fourth straight start. He warmed up on the mound for the sixth but was pulled for Ryan Webb, who pitched two scoreless innings. Tommy Hunter got the final five outs. Norris said he felt something "kind of funny" while throwing a fastball in the fifth. "It kind of grabbed on me," he said. "Ive had groin stuff before, especially my left one but not necessarily my right one. Youve got to be real careful with those." "I could see it getting a little worse and I wanted to be smart, but really, hats off to the offence for scoring and to the bullpen for picking me up," Norris added. "Pretty sore right now." Orioles manager Buck Showalter said Norris probably will pitch the night game of a split doubleheader Friday against Tampa Bay, but the right-hander said it was too soon to tell. "Weve got other options, but Im hoping we caught it in time," Showalter said. Pressed into the rotation because of injuries to CC Sabathia, Ivan Nova and Michael Pineda, Nuno (1-4) is having a hard time with the homer-friendly dimensions at Yankee Stadium. He was rocked in his previous outing in Oakland and is 0-4 since beating the Los Angeles Angels on May 7. "This is what we have. And as I said, its not like theres just starting pitchers lying around out there," New York manager Joe Girardi said, explaining that Nuno will stay in the rotation. "Right now, this is what it is." The left-hander yielded five runs -- four earned -- and six hits in 6 1-3 innings. He allowed three home runs and has served up 13 in 39 1-3 innings this season at home, where he is 0-3 with a 7.09 ERA. "My fastball today, I just left it up too much," Nuno said. "I trusted all my stuff today. No regrets and everything, but they just got to my fastball." Jones hit a solo shot with two outs in the first and drew a leadoff walk in the fourth before Cruz connected. Cruz began the day one home run behind Toronto slugger Edwin Encarnacion for the major league lead. "Hes carried us along a lot of the season," Hardy said. Pearces drive made it 5-1 in the fifth, and Hardy went deep off Jose Ramirez in the eighth for his 159th career homer and first since Sept. 5, 2013, against Jose Quintana of the Chicago White Sox. "We like hitting home runs," Jones said. Back in the dugout, Hardy got the silent treatment. He threw sunflower seeds on himself and was doused with water by Cruz. The two-time All-Star shortstop has hit at least 22 home runs five times, including a career-high 30 with Baltimore in 2011. "Normally I just put my head down and run. This time I kind of watched a little bit to make sure that it got up," Hardy said. "As I was rounding third, I looked into the dugout and no one had moved. So I kind of knew that they were going to sit there." NOTES: Baltimore recalled reliever Brad Brach from Triple-A Norfolk. ... Nuno has allowed 15 homers in 67 1-3 innings overall. ... Pineda (right shoulder muscle) will get another week off after an MRI still showed "a trace of inflammation," Girardi said. ... Curtis Dickson scored once and set up three more for Calgary and Dan MacRae, Geoff Snider, Tor Reinholdt, Karsen Leung and Matthew Dinsdale.PITTSBURGH, Pa. - With their captain under fire and their season on the brink of collapse, the Pittsburgh Penguins responded with a crackling show of force. Of course, having the New York Rangers look like a team only too happy to get back home with a split helped. Kris Letang broke a scoreless tie in the second period, and Marc-Andre Fleury made 22 saves for his franchise-record seventh playoff shutout to lift the Penguins to a 3-0 victory on Sunday night, tying the second-round series one game apiece. Letangs 15th career postseason goal matched Larry Murphys record for Penguins defensemen. Jussi Jokinen scored during a third-period power play, and Evgeni Malkin added an empty-net goal for the Penguins, who pushed around the suddenly weary Rangers. Fleury earned his 50th career playoff victory. "I thought to a man our players were extremely good all night," Pittsburgh coach Dan Bylsma said. "It was a huge win for us." Game 3 is Monday night in New York. Henrik Lundqvist made 32 saves for New York, but the Rangers mustered little offense while playing their fourth game in six days. Not that coach Alain Vigneault wanted to blame fatigue for a listless performance. "Did my goaltender look tired? He was on top of his game," Vigneault said. "If hes not tired, nobody else should be." The Rangers have lost eight straight Game 2s and have dropped 13 consecutive games when leading in a series. They had their chances to jump ahead early, only to be let down again by an anemic power play. Three times in the first 10 minutes a Penguins player skated to the penalty box, and three times the Rangers spent two minutes milling about as though they were killing time before getting back to even strength. The Rangers finished 0 for 4 with the man advantage and havent scored the last 29 times theyve had an extra skater on the ice. "It could have given us some momentum, and we didnt finish," Vigneault said. "Ive got to find the right trigger points here to make it work. Well spend the night trying to figure it out." Only Lundqvist seemed interested in sending the Rangers back to New York with a commanding 2-0 lead. He was typically brilliant, particularly when Pittsburgh captain Sidney Crosby was on the ice. The NHLs leading scorer and Hart Trophy finalist is in the midst of a lengthy postseason scoring funk. He began the night without a goal in 12 straight playoff gaames, a span that included 327 shifts and 275 minutes of ice time.dddddddddddd Bylsma insisted early Sunday that he anticipated seeing Crosby at his "best" with the season possibly at stake. Though Crosby failed to score, it was the only thing he didnt do. For the first time in weeks, he looked like himself. Relentless at both ends of the ice, the jump in his game that was missing at times during a listless performance in Game 1 returned. "To see Sid play like that tonight was really inspiring for everybody in our dressing room," Letang said. "He was really dangerous." Crosby finished with a game-high six shots. During one stretch at the end of the first period he produced a pair of scoring opportunities, including a nifty deke around two defenders, before he ripped a wrist shot that just missed the net. Each time Crosby appeared poised to end the drought, Lundqvist found a way to get a piece of the puck. He made a sprawling leg save on a tip-in attempt by Crosby, though Lundqvist wasnt so fortunate the next time the Penguins came at him. Chris Kunitz began a breakout by feeding Malkin at the New York blue line. Malkin slipped the puck over to Letang, who flipped it toward the net. Rangers defenseman Dan Girardi dived headfirst to block the attempted pass to Kunitz, but the puck deflected off Girardis stick and past a surprised Lundqvist to give Pittsburgh the lead. "They just spent a lot of time in our own end," Lundqvist said. "That was the biggest difference." Fleury had little problem letting the one-goal advantage stand up. The Rangers rarely challenged him over the final 30 minutes, and Jokinen and Malkin removed any remaining drama by scoring twice in the last 5 minutes. Jokinen banged in a rebound off a shot by James Neal for his fourth goal of the playoffs with 3:30 remaining. Malkin beat two Rangers to tap in an empty-net goal with 54 seconds left as the Penguins exhaled. "Now the series is tied 1-1, and two games in their building," Jokinen said. "Im sure theyre going to be better. We need to keep playing the way were playing." NOTES: Lundqvist made his 75th career playoff appearance. He will tie Mike Richters club record for games played if he starts, as expected, on Monday night. ... Pittsburgh D Brooks Orpik missed his fourth straight game with an undisclosed injury. ... The Penguins are 2-6 in their last eight Game 2s. ' ' '

New Zealand look the complete one-day outfit under the inspirational leadership of Brendon McCullum, says Mark Butcher. The Black Caps got their World Cup campaign off to an emphatic start with a 98-run victory over Sri Lanka at Christchurchs Hagley Oval on Saturday.McCullum plundered 65 off 49 balls to set the tone for a dominant batting display, putting on 111 with Martin Guptill for the first wicket before Kane Williamson (57) and Corey Anderson (75 off 46 balls) picked up the big-hitting mantle. A half-century from Corey Anderson helped New Zealand to a 98 run win over Sri Lanka in the Cricket World Cup. But it was McCullum who caught the eye of former England opener Butcher, who said: He has such self-belief, such self-confidence. The pitch was meant to be a little bit tacky. There had been some rain around, the weather was bad.He just decided OK, there’s a length that I dont want Sri Lanka to bowl and if they bowl it there, Im running at it and attacking it.Lasith Malinga was a little of colour because he’s been out of the game for a long time but McCullum gives the bowlers nightmares because you know that if you let that ball go and it doesn’t go exactly where you want it to, he’s going to punish you.The way he captains the team is fabulous as well - he must instil so much confidence in his players because he always backs them to do the aggressive thing.New Zealand have got the bases covered so well. Anderson is left-arm, medium quick – he perfectly complements the likes of Tim Southee. Watch this stunning one-handed catch from a fan during the Sri Lanka v New Zealand in the Cricket World Cup. They’ve got the left-armers of Trent Boult, they’ve got off-spin in Nathan McCullum if they choose to pick him. The evergreen Daniel Vettori is bowling brilliantly again. They look the complete outfit at the moment. There were questions, I suppose, about how they would handle being fancied as opposed to being dark horses. On the evidence of their win over Sri Lanka, it isn’t bothering them one bit.Anderson was named man-of-the-match after adding figures of 2-18 to his brutal innings, which featured eight fours and two sixes.Sky Sports pundit Bob Willis hailed his contribution, saying: He’s an extraordinary player. He’s just appeared on the scene out of nowhere. It was only that incredible innings by AB de Villiers in Johannesburg that deprived Anderson of the fastest century in one-day international cricket. There’s nothing to say that he won’t beat that in this competition. He’s a superb all-round cricketer, particularly in the one-day format. You’ve got to remember that New Zealand’s cricketers are all the time in the shadow of the All Blacks rugby team – it’s much more difficult to express yourself as a cricketer. But hats off to Brendon McCullum. You don’t have to think back too far to the disarray that New Zealand were in with Vettori giving up the captaincy and Ross Taylor being given the job and that being taken away from him.So it was a very, very delicate situation when Brendon McCullum came in and tried to galvanise this team with all the distractions of T20 cricket going on around the world.Watch New Zealand take on Scotland in Mondays Group A clash at 10pm on Sky Sports World Cup. He could have transferred when academic sanctions barred the Huskies from the NCAA tournament his junior season. But the guard wanted to pay back the school for the joy of a national title his freshman year, for his struggles as a sophomore. Napier sure did that Sunday, carrying UConn back to the Final Four in front of thousands of roaring Huskies fans at Madison Square Garden. He scored 17 of his 25 points in the second half in a 60-54 upset of fourth-seeded Michigan State. The East Regionals most outstanding player hit three huge free throws with 30.6 seconds left, making clutch shot after clutch shot just as Kemba Walker did when Napier was a freshman. The Huskies (30-8) rallied from a nine-point second-half deficit to become the first No. 7 seed to reach the Final Four since the tournament expanded to 64 teams in 1985. "His will to win -- you could just see it," said Gary Harris, who led Michigan State with 22 points. "He wasnt going to let his team lose." The Spartans seniors become the first four-year players recruited by Tom Izzo to fail to make a Final Four. "As the game got closer and closer to ending, it was on my mind a lot, every huddle," said big man Adreian Payne, who had 13 points and nine rebounds but was repeatedly pushed to the perimeter by UConns defenders. The undersized Huskies matched Michigan States physical play box-out for box-out, holding the Spartans (29-9) to just six offensive rebounds and six points in the paint. "Were physical, too," said second-year coach Kevin Ollie, who is now 4-0 in the NCAA tournament after replacing mentor Jim Calhoun. "Dont get it mixed up. We are predators out there." UConn dared Michigan State to shoot 3-pointers, and the Spartans nearly made enough, going 11 for 29 from behind the arc. Harris was 4 for 9 on 3s, but his teammates were a combined 10 for 32 from the floor. Trailing 51-49 with more than two minutes left, Michigan State had a chance to tie or take the lead. Payne threw the ball away, and Napier drilled a jumper on the other end. After Paynes free throws pulled the Spartans back within two, Keith Appling was whistled for a foul -- the fifth on Michigan States other senior starter -- for contact with Napier on a 3-point attempt. Napier extended the lead to 56-51, and after Travis Trice missed a 3, Phillip Nolan sllipped free for a dunk that clinched the victory.dddddddddddd "We got what we deserved today," Izzo said. "I tried to tell these guys that, when you get to the tournament, you got to bring it every second. And today Connecticut did, and we just kind of werent as good as we have been." Ryan Boatright made four steals as Michigan State committed 16 turnovers. Some were caused by UConns quickness, others by poor decisions by the Spartans. Izzo thought his team, a popular pick to win it all after finally getting healthy in March, looked tired. DeAndre Daniels shut down Branden Dawson, who scored 24 points in Michigan States Sweet 16 win over top-seeded Virginia. Dawson attempted just three field goals, making one, to finish with five points. The 6-foot-10, 245-pound Payne hit two long jumpers to put Michigan State up 32-23 less than four minutes into the second half. But Napier started driving, getting the bigger Appling in foul trouble and UConn back in the game. "When Coach looks at me a certain way, I just know I got to be more aggressive," said Napier, who passed Ray Allen for fourth on the Huskies all-time scoring list with 1,925 points. After hitting four straight free throws to tie the score at 32 with 12:38 left, Napier was struck in the face by Harris -- the UConn guard was called for a foul on the play -- and left the court with his nose gushing blood. He was back less than a minute later when Daniels completed a three-point play to give the Huskies the lead for good. Boatrights contested 3-pointer with the shot clock winding down put UConn up 49-39 with less than seven minutes left. The Huskies won their third national title in 2011, but they were ineligible for last years tournament because of previous low scores on the NCAAs academic progress measure. They face Florida in the national semifinals Saturday, and theyll be confident they can beat the No. 1 overall seed. The Gators have won 30 straight, but their last loss was to UConn, 65-64 on Dec. 2. After the Huskies were routed 81-48 by Louisville in the regular-season finale, Ollie showed his players video of that victory to remind them of what happens when they play frenetic defence. "Were going to be well prepared, because I know about these guys heart," Ollie said. "Thats what got us through: It was a heart of a champion, heart of a lion." ' ' '
TAMPA, Fla. -- A month after being inducted into pro footballs Hall of Fame, Derrick Brooks will become the newest member of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers Ring of Honor. The team formally announced Tuesday that the nine-time All-Pro linebacker who led the Bucs to their only Super Bowl title 11 seasons ago will also have his No. 55 jersey retired during a ceremony at halftime of a home game against the St. Louis Rams on Sept. 14. Brooks was the 28th player selected in the 1995 NFL draft and teamed with Tampa Bays other first-round pick that year -- Hall of Famer Warren Sapp -- to form the foundation of a dominant defence that helped transform a struggling franchise once jokingly called the "Yucs" into a perennial playoff contender. "If Warren was the heart of our defence, then todays inductee, Derrick Brooks, was the soul that propelled us to our world championship in 2002," Bucs co-chairman Bryan Glazer said. "On any given Sunday, Derrick easily was the best athlete on the field," Glazer added. "There was no tight end he could not cover, no quarterback he could not chase down for a sack and no running back he could not tackle in the open field." Brooks, wholl enter the pro football Hall of Fame in August, joins Lee Roy Selmon, John McKay, Jimmie Giles, Paul Gruber and Sapp in having his name displayed in the Ring of Honor, which was created in 2009 at Raymond James Stadium. Selmon, elected to the Hall of Fame in 1995, and Sapp, enshrined in Canton a year ago, are the only other players to have their jerseys retired by the Buccaneers. The 11-time Pro Bowl selection recalled Tuesday how when Tony Dungy arrived in Tampa in 1996 -- Brooks second pro season -- the former Bucs coach challenged him and Sapp to become the best players they could be by striving to do for Tampa Bay what eventual Hall of Famers Joe Greene and Jack Ham did for the Pittsburgh Steelers in the 1970s. "We took it to heart," Brooks said, adding that someone had suggested to him that the Bucs decision to induct him into the Ring of Honor was one of "worst-kept" secrets in town because it comes the same year he joined Sapp as a first-ballot Hall of Famer. "I dont look at it that way. As I told Mr. Glazer, you dont take anything for granted. You dont make any assumptions," Brooks said. "Today is a very important day in my life. To have my number retired is extremely special, too." Brooks didnt miss a game in 14 pro seasons, ending his career with a stretch of 208 consecutive regular-season starts, tied for the 10th-longest streak in NFL history, His 10 consecutive Pro Bowl berths from 1997 to 2007 tied for the second-longest by a linebacker in league history.
