EAST LONDON, South Africa -- Ricardo Santos of Portugal fired a 9-under 62 for a two-shot lead in the first round of the Africa Open on Thursday. Santos had five birdies going out and four birdies coming in for a flawless opening round at East London Golf Club. In a four-way tie for second were Denmarks Lucas Bjerregaard, Wales Rhys Davies, South Africas Garth Mulroy and Englands Richard Bland, who all shot 64s. Americans Brinson Paolini and John Hahn were among a group of six players tied for sixth, three off Santos lead. Santos was the 2012 rookie of the year on the European Tour and has a decent record in South Africa with top-30 finishes in his last five events. "Im very pleased to make a run like I did today," he said. "I hit the ball solidly from the tee and my putting was all good. To shoot minus nine you have to play awesome golf." One of the last finishers, Santos overtook the field with three birdies in his last five holes after starting on No. 10. They ensured he was two clear of the chasing pack, which includes one of the home favourites, Mulroy. Mulroy had an eagle on No. 3, six birdies and a bogey. Early leader Santos is one of a string of foreigners fighting home player dominance in South Africa. The four previous Africa Opens have been won by South Africans and George Coetzees victory at the Joburg Open last week was the ninth home win in the last 12 tour events in the country. One of his most glaring weaknesses as a young guard in the league was his playmaking ability. As a 19-year-old rookie in 2009-10, DeRozan averaged less than one assist per game. Among NBA guards that logged at least 20 minutes per outing that season, DeRozan assisted on the lowest percentage of his teammates field goals (just under 5 per cent, tied with Orlandos Mickael Pietrus, per NBA.com/stats). Hes come a long way since then, making good on his yearly end-of-season promise. DeRozans four assists in Sundays win over the Magic raised his season total to 205, a new career-high, besting last years mark with 26 games left to play. "I want to make my teammates better," said the Raptors guard, who continues to evolve as a distributer, averaging a career-best 3.8 dimes this season. "It just comes with experience and understanding. Its something that I really enjoy doing, getting my teammates involved, looking for them." The 24-year-olds assist numbers have increased in each of his five seasons and his assist percentage this year (18.6) is more than three-times higher than it was in his rookie campaign (4.9). DeRozan had recorded five or more assists in just five of his first 2222 games as an NBA player, his first three years in the league.dddddddddddd Since then hes accomplished that feat 28 times in 136 contests, including 15 during his 2013-14 breakout season. "Thats huge," Dwane Casey said of his leading scorers improved court vision. "Now hes drawing so much attention from the other teams as far as double teaming, guys helping, theyre sinking in and hes making teams pay for it." "Hes one of the best wings right now in the league as far as passing the ball out [of the double team] and hes doing a great job of it," Casey continued. "So thats a big step in his growth process. Its good to see and the more attention he gets the more hes going to have to rely on that part of his game." A first-time all-star this season, DeRozan has had to adjust to the defensive attention hes getting now that he finds himself on the top of the oppositions scouting report. Theres nowhere left to hide, not after the trade of top dog Rudy Gay, but DeRozan has embraced the responsibility. "The game definitely does slow down," he noted. "You understand every defence. Theres not too many defences I havent seen yet and just watching film and understanding how teams play key players, especially key scorers, once you understand that a lot of things come a lot easier." As a team, the Raptors are just 14-17 when DeRozan scores 20 or more points, however theyre 18-8 when he tallies at least four assists. ' ' '
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- If this was Mike Shanahans final game with the Washington Redskins, it was just like the season. Very disappointing. Jerrel Jerigan caught a 24-yard touchdown pass and ran 49 yards for another to lead the New York Giants to a 20-6 victory over Washington on Sunday. Shanahan has not only seen the Redskins (3-13) finish the season with an eight-game losing streak just a year after winning the NFC East, but his future coaching the team is uncertain because of his shaky relationship with oft-injured franchise quarterback Robert Griffin III. The Giants (7-9) also arent going to the playoffs, but they closed the season with a 7-3 record after losing their first six games. Its a finish that probably will have two-time Super Bowl winning coach Tom Coughlin back next season, unless the 67-year-old decides he has had enough. The game was the final one at MetLife Stadium until the Super Bowl on Feb. 2. This one was about as ugly as it gets, and the constant rain and injuries didnt help. The Giants lost quarterback Eli Manning (ankle), receivers Rueben Randle (knee), Hakeem Nicks (ankle) and offensive tackle Will Beatty (broken leg) in the regular-season finale, while the Redskins saw cornerback Josh Wilson (calf) and defensive end Jarvis Jenkins (head) leave the game. Before leaving at the end of the first half, Manning combined with Jernigan on a 30-yard catch and run that set up the touchdown pass two plays later for a 7-3 lead. Jernigan got his other touchdown on the final play of the third quarter on an end around after taking a handoff from Curtis Painter, who played the second half with Manning out. Manning finished 10 of 24 for 152 yards with the touchdown and his career-high 27th interception of the season. Josh Brown had field goals of 34 yards in the second quarter and 38 in the fourth. The way the Giants defence was playing, thats all New York needed. Washington got field goals of 31 and 49 yards from Kai Forbath, both after Giants turnovers. The Redskins finished with 251 total yards after converting on 5 of 20 third-down attempts. Kirk Cousins, who started third straight game since RGIII was shut down, was 19 of 49 for 169 yards with two interceptions. The game might have been the last for Redskins linebacker London Fletcher, who said he is 99 per cent sure his 16-year career will end this season. He played in all 256 games in his career, starting the last 215, an NFL record for linebackers. Rex Burkhead Jersey . -- Once again, Carlos Santana was a huge hit in Kansas City. Cristiano Ronaldo must reinvent himself if he wants to prolong his Real Madrid career, according to Sky Sports La Liga Weekly podcast. The forward, who turns 32 in February, was recently substituted for tactical reasons for the first time in his seven years at the Santiago Bernabeu in Reals 2-2 draw at Las Palmas. Ronaldo shows his displeasure after being substituted by Real Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane at Las Palmas However, while Real head coach Zinedine Zidane was criticised in some quarters of the Spanish press for the move, with Ronaldo himself visibly unhappy with the decision, Sky Sports Spanish football commentator Rob Palmer thinks the Frenchman made the right call. Ronaldo turns 32 in February and he is now at the veteran stage of his career, but the problem is he has not quite accepted that now, Palmer told this weeks La Liga Weekly podcast. He still thinks he is a young man and he parades himself round the field and that does not help him. Ronaldo scored four goals including a perfect hat-trick as Portugal annihilated Andorra 6-0 in Match Day 2 of the World Cup qualifiers When he gets to the point where he accepts that he is no longer the great Cristiano Ronaldo when he was 27, 28 and scoring 55 goals a season and has to slightly reinvent himself, like Lionel Messi is having to do at the moment, then he will maybe become more acceptable to the general public. Watch NOW TV Watch Sky Sports for just £6.99. No contract. You would have to say though that as a manager, he would be your problem in the changing room because you would still want to get the best out of him, massage his ego and you would want Cristiano Ronaldo in your team. But I thought it was great management by Zinedine Zidane the other week to bring him off as he was not being effective in that game. It would be foolish to get rid of him when he is 31, 32. He is not at the peak of his powers, but he is not past it yet either. Rob Palmer, Sky Sports Spanish football commentator And when you looked around the players and thought: Who should I bring off who is not having an impact on this game and who will raise the game of everybody else? and he brought Ronaldo off.If you can bring Ronaldo off, then that gets everybody elses backs up, as if he is going to go for the first time, and it was the first time he had been taken off tactically, then this manager actually means the business. So I thought it was great management by Zidane, even though he got hammered in the Spanish press for it at the time. Cristiano Ronaldo was far from impressed after being substituted for Real Madrid at Las Palmas If Ronaldo wants to maintain his career in the Spanish capital, though, the Portugal international - whose current deal at Real runs until the summer of 2018 - must copy the likes of Barcelona duo Lionel Messi and Andres Iniesta and change his game, Palmer thinks. It is how Cristiano Ronaldo reinvents himself - he keeps coming out with: I am going to play until I am 40, I am still a great player. So he just needs to look in the mirror really, he said. But he can still be an effective player till he is 35, 36 if he reinvents himself as Xavi [Hernandez] did, as Iniesta is currently doing, as Messi has done as well. But he has been injured and maybe he came back a little bit early and maybe Real Madrid are guilty of playing him before he is ready. Once he is back in the changing room, he is on the pitch as they want him to play. Zidane (right) may need to start managing Ronaldos time on the pitch to prolong his career at the Santiago Bernabeu Equally, however, if Ronaldo is to keep playing at the highest level until the end of Real contract, then Palmer believes Zidane will need to keep managing his star mans game time going forward. He has always played the full 90 minutes when he is fit, so maybe he has to be managed a bit more and Zidane has to be that man who goes head-to-head with him, he added. But it would be foolish to get rid of him when he is 31, 32. The Bulls have won nine of their last 10 games and posted a 107-100 victory over the New Orleans Pelicans on Saturday, as Jimmy Butler scored 33 points and Derrick Rose added 19. Aaron Brooks and Taj Gibson scored 13 and 12 points, respectively, with Gibson adding 10 rebounds. We got a lot of easy baskets. As a team, we rebounded the ball well and we got into the open court, Butler said. We got a lot of layups. When were playing like that were really hard to beat. Butler is averaging 26.3 ppg in his last six games. Chicago shot 46.1 percent and scored 23 points off 15 New Orleans turnovers. During the winning streak, the Bulls have won by an average score of 109.0 to 99.7. They are seventh in the NBA with 103.5 ppg and have lived up to the defensive reputation with an opponents scoring average of 98.7 ppg. The Bulls, who have scored 100 or more points 13 times in the last 16 games, have been dominant on the road with a 13-4 record and the 13 away wins are tied with Golden State for the most in the NBA. Chicago is 14-4 against teams from the East and 16-5 when reaching the 100- point mark. It will begin a five-game homestand Tuesday versus Brooklyn. The Pacers have won three of their last four games, and will play two straight at home versus Chicago and Miami.dddddddddddd They are 6-8 in Indy. Were playing unselfish and hopefully that continues. Vogels team scored 60 points in the second half and had 33 assists. West has been playing well lately with an average of 13.6 ppg in his last nine games. It has helped the Pacers shoot 50 percent or better in each of the previous four games after failing to hit the mark over the first 27. Indiana, which is 6-9 versus the East, is scoring 94.7 ppg, which is 26th in the NBA. However, it is third in opponents scoring at 96.5 ppg. The Pacers defeated the Bulls, 99-90, on Nov. 15 at the United Center thanks to 21 points from Luis Scola, Solomon Hill and A.J. Price. Butler scored 32 points in that one for Chicago, which is winless in the last four trips to Indiana. Chicago leads the overall series 89-80 with the Pacers, but Indiana holds a 56-29 advantage at home. The Bulls are 6-22 at Bankers Life Fieldhouse. ' ' '
HAMPTON, Ga. -- Crew chief Ernie Cope was worried when Kevin Harvicks practice laps didnt go as well as expected Friday. So Cope sought reassurance from his driver. "I asked, Are we all right?" Cope said. "He said, Were going to smash them tomorrow night." Kevin Harvick indeed was a smashing success, leading the final 159 laps to beat Joey Logano and win an unusually wreck-free NASCAR Nationwide Series race at Atlanta Motor Speedway on Saturday night. Harvick, who will start from the pole Sunday night in the NASCAR Sprint Cup race, took the lead on the 37th lap and ruled the 1.54-mile tri-oval for his third win of the season in 11 races. "Obviously, the car was flawless from start to finish," Harvick said. Kyle Larson started second and finished third. Kyle Busch was fourth, and pole-sitter Chase Elliott fifth. There was only one lead change, no crashes and two yellow flags, including one after light rain began to fall on Lap 121. Cars ran 13 laps under caution before the race resumed. The few interruptions limited the chances that Harvicks dominance could be disturbed. It was a perfect recipe for him to put a lock on the lead and never let go -- even if it wasnt the most exciting 195 laps in track history. "Weve dominated so many races and just lost them because of goofy circumstances," Harvick said. "When you have a car like that you like to see it go clean. I know everybody likes to see a super-exciting race, but we were good with just a good clean race ... because I felt like our chances were pretty good for winning the race." Elliott, the season points leader, led the first 36 laps before Harvick pulled ahead. For Dale Earnhardt Jr., the team owner for both cars, it was the perfect scenario. "Kevin just keeps doing his thing," Earnhardt said. "Its been a lot of fun working with him. Hes brought a lot to our team as far as performance and speed. He continues to help us improve our equipment and cars and that raises the competitiveness of the whole company. ... Thats pretty unique. You dont really get that in a lot of race car drivers." Harvick isnt a regular on the Nationwide Series, but he has been a factor in each of his 11 starts. He has finished in the top five in nine races. He was seventh in his other two starts. "I felt like having him driving our car, we were in good shape to lead a lot of laps and maybe get a victory," Earnhardt said. Elliott won his first career pole with a qualifying time of 180.240 mph. The 18-year-old Elliott became the youngest pole winner in Atlanta history. Jeff Gordon was 20 when he won the pole in Atlanta in 1992. Elliott overshot his pit on his final stop, costing his team valuable seconds and, he said, two spots in the final standings. "I thought we got better and better as we went," Elliott said. "I made an unacceptable mistake there at the end and cost us a couple spots. My guys deserved better than that. So my bad." A grandstand at Atlanta Motor Speedway is named for Elliotts father, Bill Elliott, who had five career wins at the track -- tied for fifth-best. Bill Elliott was the grand marshal for the race. CLEVELAND -- The Indians playoff push hit a snag in Sundays 2-1 loss to the New York Mets. Cleveland managed only five hits -- all singles -- and closer Chris Perez gave up the go-ahead run in the ninth as the Indians four-game winning streak came to an end. The Indians entered Sunday trailing Tampa Bay by a game in the battle for the second wild card spot in the American League. Cleveland was trying for its first five-game winning streak since a season-best eight-game run July 24-Aug. 1, but its offence was stopped cold by five Mets pitchers. The Indians only run came in the sixth when Asdrubal Cabrera was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Cabrera had a chance to put the Indians ahead in the eighth but bounced into an inning-ending double play with the bases loaded. The Indians had one last shot in the ninth. Jason Giambi led off the inning with a bloop single to left, his 2,000th career hit. With one out, pinch-runner Mike Aviles was thrown out attempting to steal second and ejected by umpire Gary Darling for arguing the call. Drew Stubbs struck out to end the game. "Its something Ill always treasure, but Id trade it for a win," Giambi said of his milestone hit. "We needed to come back and tie it there." The Indians open a three-game series Monday against Kansas City, another contender for a wild card spot. "We took two of three in this series, you have to look at it that way," said pitcher Joe Smith, who worked out a bases-loaded, one-out jam in the eighth. "We come back on the horse tomorrow. We need to take care of business when they come in." While the Indians are in the playoff hunt, they havent caught on with Clevelands fans. With the Browns opening the NFL season at home against Miami, Sundays baseball game drew a crowd of only 13,317. Eric Youngs two-out double in the ninth sent the Indians to defeat. Juan Lagares started the rally with a single off Perez (5-3) and moved to second on a sacrifice. Omar Quintanilla struck out, but Young lined a 2-0 pitch down the right field line. Frank Francisco (1-0), in his first appearance of the season, threw the double play ball to Cabrera. LaTroy Hawkins pitched the ninth for his eighth save. Daisuke Matsuzaka, who spent most of the season pitching for the Indians Triple-A team in Columbus, Ohio, took a one-hit shutout into the sixth before literally being driven out of the game. He retired the first two batters before Jason Kipnis singled and Carlos Santana walked. Jason Kubels line drive back to the mound appeared to hit Matsuzaka in the chest and rolled away, loading the bases. Mets manager Terry Collins went to the mound and pulled Matsuzaka for right-hander Vic Black, who hit Cabrera in the lower right leg with his second pitch to force in a run and tie the game. Matsuzaka pitched poorly in his first three starts with the Mets since being signed last month, leading to speculation his days with the team were numbered. He was charged with one run in 5 2-3 innings, which should buy him some extra time with the Mets. "He pitched an outstanding game," Collins said. "Boy, I was really happy for him." Justin Turner hit a leadoff homer in the fourth off Indians starter Danny Salazar, the only run the rookie allowed in four innings. Turner was injured in the sixth while sliding into second base when he took a hard tag in the head from Cabrera. He was on the ground for a couple of minutes but stayed in the game. Salazar struck out eight in three innings, including five in a row, but a high pitch count prevented him from working deeper into the game. He was pulled after throwing 80 pitches. The Indians dont want to take any chances with the 23-year-old right-hander, who had Tommy John surgery in 2010 and has already pitched a career-high 130 innings between the minors and majors. "The good thing was that he was strong, but maybe he was too strong," Indians manager Terry Francona said. "He had a real hard time keeping the ball down today. Because of that his pitch count was high. He had a hard time working down today." Whats the latest on trade talk surrounding New York Rangers captain Ryan Callahan? Dreger: At least one team has requested and was given permission to speak with Stephen Bartlett, who represents Ryan Callahan, to gauge what his contract demands might be. Now, all along its been believed that hes looking for at least seven years and north of $6 million per year. We know the St. Louis Blues have expressed interest. Theres talk of Chris Stewart being involved in some type of a package. Theres a lot of interest and it continues to build. LeBrun: I spoke to three team executives today who said that Glen Sather is doing this because he still wants to sign Callahan. Hes putting pressure on his captain, so there are still some people who dont quite believe that theyre going to go all the way and trade him. I should mention that the Columbus Blue Jackets are another team keeping an eye on the Callahan hunt. Dreger: Unless his contract demands soften, theres a 100 per cent chance that hes getting traded by the New York Rangers. Theyre not paying him what hes asking. Note: According to Larry Brooks of the New York Post, Rangers general manager Glen Sather has offered Callahan a five-year extension worth approximately $30 million but sources say the Rangers captain has held firm on looking for a seven-year, $42 million deal. How badly do the Los Angeles Kings need/want scoring? McKenzie: They desperately need scoring and, unfortunately for them, theres nothing front line available right at this moment. Matt Moulson would be a great rental from the Buffalo Sabres, but the price is high - a first-round pick and a prospect - and hes injured until after the Olympic break. Mike Cammalleri is another rental whhod be very good.dddddddddddd. The conventional wisdom is that hell become available, but right now, the Calgary Flames are still talking to him about a contract, so technically, hes not yet available. On Thomas Vanek, the New York Islanders have to decide what theyre going to do, but that will be a last-minute decision right at the deadline. Either theyre all in adding players or selling Thomas Vanek as a rental to cut their losses. But heres another interesting name: Sam Gagner of the Edmonton Oilers. Hes got two years left, not a rental, at a $4.8 million cap hit. It will be tough to make the numbers work on a cap-heavy team like the Los Angeles Kings, but he is a player of interest. Has the Vancouver Canucks recent flurry of injuries changed the way theyre going to approach the deadline and the rest of the year? LeBrun: I can tell you this - they will not be in on the rental market and I think there have been some decisions made in Vancouver over the past week, which is this: Were not good enough to go out and beat a Chicago or St. Louis or some of the powerhouse teams in the West. Were not giving up on the season, but if we make a trade, its for a young player. Its time to retool and reset in Vancouver after all these years of contending. Its all about youth and other than the Sedin twins, I think all bets are off for almost any other player on that roster. Alexander Edler on defence will get a lot of interest probably after the Olympics. Interesting times ahead, in my opinion, in Vancouver. After Fridays trade of Mark Fraser, are there any other deals on the horizon for the Toronto Maple Leafs? Dreger: The Toronto Maple Leafs have informed teams that theyre willing to move Nikolai Kulemin, but this isnt simply getting rid of salary to make some room for the return of Dave Bolland or anything like that. The Leafs need more than a pick. They need a player in return, but no offers yet on the table that make sense. ' ' '
VANCOUVER - The B.C. Lions signed receiver Courtney Taylor and defensive tackle Eric Taylor to contract extensions Friday. Both players are under contract to the CFL club through next season. "Courtney and Eric are significant contributors on the field and respected leaders in the dressing room," Wally Buono, the Lions GM and vice-president of football operations, said in a statement. Courtney Taylor enters his third CFL season after registering 61 catches for 774 yards and five TDs last year. Eric Taylor begins his fourth season with the Lions and had 35 tackles and five sacks in 2013. Even normally reliable Mark Buehrle is struggling, not having won a start since June 1. That isnt even the worst news for manager John Gibbons ballclub. Edwin Encarnacion had to leave the game after hearing "a pop" in his right leg while legging out an infield grounder in the first inning of the Blue Jays 5-1 loss to the Oakland Athletics on Saturday night. The Toronto slugger, who went into the night tied for second in the majors with 26 home runs, will undergo an MRI in the next day or two. "I wouldnt guess itd be a quick thing," Gibbons said. "He said he felt something pop in his quad. Thats all I know right now. Id be very surprised if he went on the DL but I dont know that for sure yet." As tough as losing their top offensive threat was, the Blue Jays seemed even more irked about a play in the eighth inning that they felt should have been overturned by replay. With Oakland leading 3-1, Melky Cabrera was thrown out trying to score from first base on a double to left by Jose Bautista. Oakland left fielder Craig Gentry retrieved the ball and shortstop Jed Lowrie made a strong relay throw home to catcher Derek Norris, who appeared to tag a sliding Cabrera on the back. Home plate umpire Bill Miller called Cabrera out, and after a brief review, the call was upheld. "He missed him by a good foot or two," Bautista said. "I dont really know which replay they were looking @ but clearly they must have had a different video feed than the one we had. This whole replay thing has become a joke in my eyes. I think they should just ban it. They should just get rid of it.dddddddddddd" Bautista vented his anger over the call for nearly five minutes, almost entirely unprompted. "I dont know what kind of agenda the people that are doing the replays are on, what their plan is ... but obviously getting the right call on the field is not what theyre doing. I dont see the point in having this replay system that doesnt work," he said. Gibbons tempered his frustration over the call. "The bottom line is we played a crappy game tonight," he said. "Theres no way around that." Encarnacion drove in Torontos only run in the first inning before getting hurt. He beat out a possible double play ball, allowing Jose Reyes to score. Encarnacion stepped on the first base bag, limped for a few steps and then tumbled to the ground. Buehrle (10-6) gave up three runs and 10 hits over six innings. Buehrle walked one and struck out three. He had a four-game winning streak against the As end. Josh Donaldson hit a home run and Scott Kazmir (10-3) won for the fifth time in his last six decisions. He walked two and struck out eight, improving to 6-1 in eight home starts. Kazmir retired 20 of 23 hitters after giving up singles to Reyes and Cabrera to start the game. Vitor Belfort dropped out of his upcoming UFC middleweight title shot on Thursday a few hours after the Nevada Athletic Commission banned testosterone replacement therapy. Belfort was scheduled to fight 185-pound champion Chris Weidman at UFC 173 on May 24. His title shot was given to Lyoto Machida by UFC President Dana White. UFC 173 is the next major card in Las Vegas, the UFCs hometown. The influential Nevada commission voted unanimously on Thursday to stop granting therapeutic use exemptions for TRT, closing a widely criticized loophole that allowed mixed martial arts fighters to compete on steroids. "As other jurisdictions may follow suit, I am going to drop my TRT program and compete in MMA without it," Belfort said in a statement provided to Fox, the UFCs broadcast partner. "Given the time constraints involved between now and my proposed next bout in May, I have determined not to apply for a license to fight in Nevada at this time." The 36-year-old Belfort has been open about his use of synthetic testosterone in recent years. His sanctioned steroid use has coincided with a career resurgence for the former UFC light heavyweight champion, who won three consecutive bouts by early-round knockout in 2013 while fighting in his native Brazil. Belfort claimed he needed TRT because of low testosterone, an argument which generated wide criticism because he failed a drug test for elevated testosterone in 2006 following a bout in Las Vegas for the Pride promotion against Dan Henderson, another acknowledged TRT user. Use of performance-enhancing drugs can lower the users natural testosterone levels. Belfort hadnt fought in Nevada since February 2011, before his announced TRT use began. He had intended to apply for an exemption to use synthetic testosterone before UFC 173. White and the UFC have been increasingly critical of TRT use in recent months, with White telling The Associated Press in January he supported the elimination of therapeutic use exemptions for testosterone. White hailed the Nevada commissions ruling Thursday. "We believe our athletes should compete based on their natural abilities and on an even playing field," White said. "We also intend to honour this ruling in international markets where, due to a lack of governing bodies, the UFC oversees regulatory efforts for our live events. We encourage all athletic commissions to adopt this ruling." The Nevada commission had granted therapeutic use exemptions for several fighters in recent years, including contenders Chael Sonnen and Frank Mir, but had never approved synthetic testosterone for a fighter who had failed a drug test for anabolic steroids. Machida is another former UFC light heavyweight champion from Brazil. He is getting a title shot against Weidman in just his third bout at 185 pounds after winning four of his last five fights overall. Weidman took the title from longtime UFC champion Anderson Silva last July and defended it in a rematch in December when Silva broke his leg while kicking Weidmans knee. Weidman has been critical of Belforts testosterone use, once saying Belfort "looks like the Hulk now" and hoping the UFC wouldnt schedule their bout in Brazil, where drug testing is considered much less stringent than in the U.S. Stitched 76ers Jerseys . The integrity of Qatars winning bid for the 2022 tournament has been repeatedly questioned since FIFAs vote four years ago. The Sunday Times newspaper in Britain reported that it had obtained millions of pieces of evidence detailing irregular payments. Mohamed bin Hammam, a Qatari former member of FIFAs executive committee, was accused of giving football officials payments totalling $5 million to build support for the bid. Despite Bin Hammams high profile role at the time of the bid as head of the Asian confederation, Qatari World Cup organizers on Sunday insisted that he "played no official or unofficial role" in the work of the big-spending committee. "After months of interviewing witnesses and gathering materials, we intend to complete that phase of our investigation by June 9, 2014, and to submit a report to the adjudicatory chamber approximately six weeks thereafter," the investigatory chamber of FIFAs ethics committee said in a statement. "The report will consider all evidence potentially related to the bidding process, including evidence collected from prior investigations." Four members of FIFAs 24-man executive committee were banned or resigned following allegations of rule-breaking by bidders and favour-seeking made during bidding for the 2018 and 2022 World Cups. Garcia was appointed in July 2012 as FIFAs independent ethics prosecutor. Bin Hammam challenged Sepp Blatter for the FIFA presidency in June 2011 but withdrew his candidacy days before the vote after being implicated in trying to bribe Caribbean voters. TSN Hockey Insiders Bob McKenzie, Pierre LeBrun and Darren Dreger gathered for the latest installment of Insider Trading and the topics discussed included the Buffalo Sabres general manager search, the resurfacing of former Toronto Maple Leafs coach Ron Wilson, Team Canadas captain and the Edmonton Oilers asking price for Sam Gagner. Who will become the new general manager of the Buffalo Sabres? McKenzie: The very clear front-runner and Pat LaFontaines first choice is Ottawa Senators assistant general manager, Tim Murray. As of Tuesday evening, no formal offer had been made to Murray and no contract negotiations have taken place as of yet. However, it is clear LaFontaine would like Murray to be the guy. In related news, Boston Bruins assistant general manager Jim Bennings window of permission to talk to the Sabres expired Tuesday. He is now out of the picture, there are also other finalists that have been told they are no longer part of the mix. Right now it is headed toward Tim Murray, but there is no formal offer or contract negotiations taking place just yet. Who will become the GM of the Calgary Flames? McKenzie: Brian Burke is getting set to commence his search, it is likely to be a slow and deliberate pace and it could be until the draft before Burke has picked a new GM. Burke has no intention of doing the job himself long-term, but he may fill the role for the balance of this season. There are several reasons for this, he will looking at many experienced candidates such as Joe Nieuwendyk and Darcy Regier, as well as up and comers like Mike Futa from the Los Angeles Kings and Brad Treliving of the Phoenix Coyotes. Due to the length of the Buffalo search, many teams granted their officials a window to interview and are not in position where they want to grant permission again and have their guys flapping in the breeze for another search. Therefore, this could drag out for quite some time. Ron Wilson walked away from hockey after being fired by the Toronto Maple Leafs, is there a chance he may resurface? Dreger: Wilson basically disappeared after the disappointment with the Leafs in 2010, 2011, 2012. There is a chance he could return, he is discreetly putting word out there that his ready, waiting and willing to coach again. For some, he may be considered a long-shot and it is relatively quiet on the coaching front but aside from his coaching record with the Maple Leafs, he is considered to be a very good coach, as his record of 1,400 games would indicate. Who will be Team Canadas captain, it seems obvious with Sidney Crosby but Jonathan Toews has two Olympics appearances, two Stanley Cups and was terrific in the 2010 Games, is there a possibly a question there? LeBrun: Toews will be in his second Olympics and there is some argument, and how could there not be after everything Toews has accomplished, but the betting money is obviously on Sidney Crosby, the best player in the world. Whats interesting to me is the dynamic between Toews and Crosby, mutual admirations aside, I remember when Toews got a text from Crosby when Toews was named captain of Chicago, that meant a lot to him. I remember in September we asked top players who their top forward in the NHL was and most of them, of course, said Crosby but Toews said "and by 30 per cent its Sidney Crosby." So there is, I think, a special bond between those two guys and theyll both wear a letter in Sochi. We expect Crosby, Kunitz, Stamkos on the top line but if Stamkos isnt ready to go, do they have a list of top two replacements for him? Lebrun: They have some candidates, I think among those at the top is Claude Giroux, a big surprise omission from Team Canada, hes one of those strong candidates if he continues to play well. James Neal is another option, a great triggerman, a guy like Stamkos that could fill the net. Those are the top two guys. Is there an X-factor for Team Canada? LeBrun: Ralph Krueger, the former Switzerland national coach, talked to the Canadian national coaching staff and they cannot believe what impact hes had in his feedback for them on the big ice and international hockey. In fact, Kruger is going to meet with head coach Mike Babcock on the Detroit Red Wings upcoming western road trip. Hell update Canada again on what hes seen overseas. P.K. Subban is on Team Canada, how are his contract negotiations going with the Montreal Canadiens? McKenzie: Negotiations are ongoing, there is no real hard news to report there other than we know Dion Phaneuf signed a long-term deal with the Maple Leafs worth $7 million a year. P.K. Subbans asking price will be somewhere from $8 million to $9 million a year. I am sure the Canadiens will not be thrilled about that and I suspect its going to be tough sledding for some time to get this deal done. Dreger: We will also continue watch the speculation around the Edmonton Oilers and Sam Gagner, there is no question the Oilers would consider moving him. The expected rate of return would be a top-six forward, a top-four defenceman or a starting goalie. Air Max 1/97 Sean Wotherspoon Kaufen . PETERSBURG, Fla. Columbus, which made the playoffs last season for only the second time in team history, began the season with a 6-15-2 record before beginning December on a six-game tear. The Blue Jackets latest victory came Saturday against the visiting Pittsburgh Penguins, who eliminated Columbus in six games during last springs Eastern Conference quarterfinals. The Jackets earned a measure of revenge for last seasons playoff defeat with the recent 4-3 shootout victory against the Penguins. Ryan Johansen was credited with the game winner in the tiebreaker, as Columbus recovered from a Pittsburgh rally late in regulation to post the win at Nationwide Arena. Columbus fell behind 2-1 after Kris Letang notched a short-handed goal at 7:22 of the third period. The Blue Jackets would take the lead after goals from Boone Jenner and Jack Johnson, the latter players tally coming with 2:11 left to stake the home club to a 3-2 advantage. Letang would strike again, however, as the defenseman tied the game by beating Sergei Bobrovsky with a slap shot with just 10.9 seconds remaining in regulation. Pittsburgh had goaltender Thomas Greiss pulled in favor of the extra attacker to get the tying goal. In the end, the Blue Jackets would regroup for the shootout victory. Cam Atkinson and Johansen scored on the hosts first two attempts, while Letang kept the visitors in it with a score on the Pens second try. Nick Folignos backhander then went wide of the net for Columbus, but Bobrovsky stopped Brandon Sutter to end the contest. Foligno added the other regulation goal for the Blue Jackets, while Bobrovsky made 33 saves for the victory. Thats a big two points for us, Foligno said. Weve got to make sure we tighten up those 6-on-5s. Weve got to find away to be a little better, a little smarter. Its tough against a high-powered team like that. Despite its ddreadful start to the season, the Blue Jackets enter todays action only six points out of a playoff spot in the East.dddddddddddd The Red Wings are tied with Tampa Bay for first place in the Atlantic Division, but theyll try to avoid posting their longest losing streak of the season tonight. Detroit has lost three in a row with the first two setbacks coming via the shootout before losing 4-1 Saturday in Toronto. The Red Wings also went 0-2-1 from Nov. 2-5, but Mike Babcocks club hasnt dropped four in a row since a six-game skid from Dec. 7-17 of last season. Two of the Red Wings losses on this slide came against the Maple Leafs, who followed up Wednesdays 2-1 shootout victory in Detroit with Saturdays home triumph. In between the setbacks against Toronto, the Wings were handed a 3-2 shootout defeat in Fridays meeting with visiting Florida. Detroit outshot the Leafs 42-19 in Wednesdays setback, but Toronto won the shot battle 41-28 in Saturdays rematch. Niklas Kronwall scored for Detroit and Petr Mrazek gave up three goals on 40 shots in the road loss. The Red Wings hope to get back on track at Joe Louis Arena, where they boast an 11-3-4 record this season. Detroit is beginning a four-game homestand tonight. After getting slammed 5-0 at home by Detroit on Nov. 18, Columbus is hoping for a better result against the Red Wings tonight in the Motor City. The Jackets have claimed six of the past eight meetings in this series overall, but Detroit holds a 4-1-1 record in the past six encounters at the Joe. Columbus has won only three times in its last 12 trips to Motown. Jimmy Howard is expected to start in net for the Red Wings tonight. Detroits No. 1 backstop is 11-4-2 with a 1.94 goals against average in his career against Columbus. Bobrovsky is 4-3-1 with a 2.37 GAA in this matchup. On the injury front for Detroit, the club is hoping to get forward Justin Abdelkader (shoulder) and defenseman Danny DeKeyser (upper body) back tonight. DeKeyser missed both games over the weekend, while Abdelkader has sat out the last six tilts. ' ' '
ROME -- Serena Williams kept the crowd from being a factor in a 6-3, 6-0 victory over 10th-seeded home favourite Sara Errani to win the Italian Open for the third time Sunday. Errani was bidding to become the first Italian to win the tournament in nearly 30 years but the top-ranked Williams quickly took control in both sets and Errani appeared slowed by a left thigh problem. Errani left the court for an injury timeout while trailing 5-3 in the opening set and came back with her thigh bandaged. On the final point before she left the court, Errani pulled up and let a shot from Williams pass by her without even attempting to get to it. "Im sorry. You were unbelievable all week," Errani told fans during the victory ceremony, as she brushed back tears. "I tried to do my best and stayed on the court only for you." Williams other Rome titles came in 2002 and last year -- and she went on to win the French Open on both occasions. "Im also sorry for Sara today," Williams told the crowd in Italian. "She really played great all week." Later, seven-time champion Rafael Nadal was facing Novak Djokovic in a No. 1 vs. No. 2 meeting in the mens final of the last key clay-court tuneup for Roland Garros, which starts next weekend. A left thigh problem prompted Williams to withdraw before her quarterfinal match at the Madrid Open last week but now she appears back on track for the French. "Im not 100 per cent but Im just kind of going on adrenaline," Williams said. Organizers attempted to whip up patriotic fervour by having the Italian anthem sung before the players walked out onto the court, and fans continuously chanted "Sara, Sara" to try and encourage Errani in an atmosphere that more resembled a Davis Cup or Fed Cup setting. But Williams jumped out to a 3-0 lead and while Errani had a few chances to get back into the first set, Williams overpowered the Italian with her serve -- she had seven aces to Erranis none -- and overall attacking game. Still, Errani could console herself by becoming the first Italian runner-up in the tournament since Raffaella Reggi took the 1985 title in Taranto. The last Italian man to win was Adriano Panatta back in 1976. When former Italian player Lea Pericoli asked Errani during the trophy presentation if she was "disappointed" with her showing, the crowd responded with boos and whistles. Pericoli then acknowledged that Erranis appearance in the final was an accomplishment by itself. Injury permitting, Errani was slated to play the doubles final later with partner Roberta Vinci against Kveta Peschke and Katarina Srebotnik. It was the 60th title of Williams career, and a large portion of those trophies have come in recent years for the 32-year-old American. Martina Navratilova holds the record with 167 titles and Williams needs seven more to match Billie Jean King for sixth place on the all-time list. "Im like a fine wine, I guess -- at least my tennis is," Williams said. "My game gets better with age." Nike Air Max Plus Günstig Kaufen . As they are wont to do, the Spurs made things real easy. The 25-year-old right-hander not only has a promising future with the Tampa Bay Rays, he will be paid well while trying to reach his potential. "Not making teams, being told I was never going to play college baseball, getting traded twice, and now Im sitting here in this seat where not many people ever get," Archer said Wednesday after finalizing a $25.5 million, six-year contract, the latest long-term deal the Rays have given to one of their young pitchers. "Having the ability to make my parents debt-free is huge for me right now. And just the willingness from the Rays to offer such a contract for somebody with under a year of service time is remarkable," Archer added. "It was definitely something I couldnt say no to. It was a smooth, easy process." The contract includes club options for 2020 and 2021 that could raise the value to $43.75 million. Archer went 9-7 with a 3.22 ERA in 23 starts as a rookie in 2013. Hes scheduled to make his first start of the season Thursday against Toronto. "Its a contract, and its guaranteed money, but I think its just the beginning of six or eight great years," Archer said. Tampa Bay has one of the deepest pitching rotations in baseball, as well as a history of signing its best young players to long-term contract early in their careers. Left-hander Matt Moore, a 17-game winner a year ago, signed a $14 million, five-year deal after making just one regular-season start in the majors. Archer gets a $1 million signing bonus and salaries of $500,000 this year, $1 million in 2015, $2.75 million in 2016, $4.75 million in 2017, $6.25 million in 2018 and $7.5 million in 2019. The Rays have a $9 million option for 2020 with a $1.75 million buyout, and if that option is exercised they have an $11 million option for 2021 with a $250,000 buyout. Rays executivve vice-president Andrew Friedman said Archer has the talent to "develop into a top-of-the-rotation starter," as well as the work ethic and character off the field to ensure the Rays are making a good investment.dddddddddddd "Its not only important to identify the talent of the player, but also who they are," Friedman said. "As much as were betting on his talent, were betting on who he is, as well." Archer was obtained from the Cubs as part of an eight-player trade that sent Matt Garza to Chicago in 2011. The new deal replaces a one-year contract agreed to in February that called for Archer to make $511,200 in the major leagues and $214,222 in the minors. The native of Clayton, N.C., was promoted from Triple-A Durham last June 1 and went on to lead AL rookies making a minimum of 20 starts in ERA, opponents batting average (.226), complete games (two), shutouts (two). He finished third in balloting for AL Rookie of the Year behind Rays outfielder Wil Myers and Detroit shortstop Jose Iglesias. Talks on the new deal began during spring training. Archer said he consulted with a number of people during the process, including some players whove signed long-term deals early in their career and some who turned it down. "What came from it is never turn your back on your first fortune," said Archer, adding that he feels blessed to be in a position to make sure his parents become debt-free. "At the end of the contract, theres still room to sign another deal or extension or whatever it might be. From where I come from, this is more than I can ever ask for, to be honest." Archer thanked the Rays for trading for him after other organizations gave up on developing him. He was drafted by the Cleveland Indians in 2006 and traded to the Cubs in December 2008. "It seems like this was the first team that Ive ever really played for that really believed in me and was willing to wait an extra year or two for me to really turn into what I could possibly be," Archer said. Kansas City, MO (SportsNetwork.com) - In five innings, Madison Bumgarner went from World Series ace to World Series closer. All the while his manager avoided him, showing Bumgarner the type of wide berth normally reserved for pitchers in the middle of a no-hitter. The stakes in this one were even bigger. I was staying away from him every inning because I was hoping he wouldnt say, Im starting to get a little tired, Bruce Bochy said with a laugh. Because theres no way I would have taken him out unless he told me that. We just got on his horse and rode it. Bumgarner was named Most Valuable Player of the World Series on Wednesday after his San Francisco Giants beat the Kansas City Royals 3-2 in Game 7 for their third title in five years. The Giants ace won Games 1 and 5 in the series and picked up a five-inning save in Game 7 on two days rest after throwing a four-hit shutout on Sunday. All of 25 years old, Bumgarner ran his career World Series record to 4-0 with a 0.25 ERA, earning at least one victory in each of San Franciscos three recent title runs. Bochy said the left-hander would be available in an all-hands-on-deck Game 7, but five innings? It gave Bumgarner 270 total innings pitched this year, including 52.2 in the postseason. He was also named MVP after the NL Championship Series against St. Louis. He had a 0.43 ERA in his three appearances against the Royals. I was just concentrating on making pitches, Bumgarner said. I wasnt thinking about how many innings I was going to go, how many pitches. I was just concentrating on outs. The first batter he faced, Omar Infante, singled to lead off the fifth inning. Infante made it to second base on a sacrifice bunt by Alcides Escobar, who was the first of 14 straight batters retired by Bumgarner before the whole thing nearly unraveled with two outs in the bottom of the ninth. Alex Gordons sliced single got past Gregor Blanco in left-center field and Gordon made it all the way to third on a two-base error that gave the Royals some hope. But Bumgarner, renowned for his cool demeanor, settled in to throw Salvador Perez six straight fastballs. Perez hit a foul pop on the sixth one, ending the game and cementing Bumgarners MVP. Madison Bumgarner, man. What can you say about him? Kansas City manager Ned Yost said. He has an entire offseason to find the words. Pat Rapp Jersey . ENGLEWOOD, Colo. -- Peyton Manning flew to New York this spring to pay his respects to Derek Jeter and David Letterman, two much-admired superstars in the middle of their long goodbyes. "Im sad to see some of these guys retiring," the Broncos quarterback said at the time. "Im not far behind." Yet retirement really isnt on Mannings radar as he prepares for his 17th NFL season, his third in Denver. Coming off the best two-year stretch of his career, Manning is keeping tacklers, tedium and time itself at bay. At 38, Manning said hell keep playing as long as hes still productive and loves the game. That passion and productivity were on full display last season when he won his fifth MVP award and set single-season records by passing for 55 touchdowns and more than 5,500 yards. There are no signs of his affection or efficiency ebbing anytime soon, either. "You see it in how he prepares every day," centre Manny Ramirez said. "Were here in the off-season and hes still putting the same amount of focus as he does in-season, preparing, trying to get better every day, trying to pick apart the defences." "I still enjoy the work and preparation," said Manning, who lost wide receiver Eric Decker to the Jets but gained coveted free agent Emmanuel Sanders and prized rookie Cody Latimer. That turnover actually helps keep Manning young at heart, coach John Fox suggested. "Theres so much change in the NFL nowadays that I think that keeps the juices flowing, whether thats getting Emmanuel Sanders up to speed or last year, Wes Welker. Anytime you put a new cog in there, thats an adjustment," Fox said. "I think he takes pride in that and he attacks that. He seems to me to be having a great time." Manning would like to play out his contract, which runs through 2016. Yet, while hes not pondering retirement, he said in an interview with The Associated Press that he has certainly contemplated what it will be like. "Sometimes I sort of kick back and I pause and I think what sorts of things would I miss the most if I wasnt playing," Manning said. The answer hits him like one of those teeth-rattling sacks by Robert Mathis. "Being in the huddle," Manning said. "Thats what I missed most when I was injured, Ill say that. I mean, theres no other type of unity or bond that I think any other job can provide. I know there are meetings, there are video conferences. But that huddle, because of where it takes place: its often on the road, in the middle of the field, in front of 80,000 people, its unique." Its what excites him even at an age when many quarterbacks have retired to the broadcast booth or are hitting thhe links instead of the weights.dddddddddddd "When you dont play football anymore, you can broadcast, you can coach, you can be in management, whatever, but you are not allowed to go into the huddle anymore," Manning said. "That huddle is just for players. You can go into the locker room after the game and you can speak to the team, but I think any retired player would probably tell you they miss the huddle." The way Manning has guided the Broncos to a 28-8 record over the last two years belies how far he had fallen when he was forced to sit out the 2011 season in Indianapolis and even had to look in a mirror to relearn his release point after a series of neck surgeries weakened his throwing arm to the point he could hardly grip, much less throw, a football. Mannings reboot has turned into a blessing. "Yeah, although I have to say, some guys might need a year off to whatever, relight to fire, whatever it may be. I didnt need a year off to remind me of how much I love football," Manning said. "But when you have it, it sure does reinforce what you kind of always thought, that I do love it." Working with play-caller Adam Gase and new teammates has revitalized Manning. "Sometimes it, the monotonous routine, the boredom, that pushes guys out, not the physical part of it," Manning said. "And I have been stimulated the past two years working with Adam and working with different teammates, so it does sort of keep the bounce in you, I think." Manning doesnt view himself so much as a 17-year NFL veteran but as Denvers third-year quarterback. "I really feel because its a new team, post-injury, its kind of a new me. Thats how I have to look at it," Manning said. "Im a different player from before I was injured. Im not saying better, worse, whatever, just a different player. And so what I can compare myself most accurately to is my first season here in Denver and kind of how I am physically and how I am with my teammates and with Adam and so its helped to have now two years to build off that baseline." He no longer feels like a visitor in his own locker room. "And I like going into that huddle," Manning said. "I like the guys that I get to work with. I like lifting weights, working with Wes Welker, doing a set of bench press with Jacob Tamme, I like working with the guys that I play with and I still like learning. I like being challenged by Adam every day to be a better football player. There are a lot of things that I still enjoy about it. "And I look forward to driving over here every day. I think as soon as you go, Golly, I do not want to go over there today, thats when youve got to get out." ' ' '
LOS ANGELES -- Los Angeles Lakers coach Mike DAntoni resigned Wednesday after less than two seasons on the job. Team spokesman John Black confirmed DAntonis resignation, ending the brief tenure of the Lakers fourth head coach in less than three years. DAntoni went 67-87 after taking over the Lakers early in the 2012-13 season. He replaced the fired Mike Brown, who lasted just 71 games after replacing 11-time NBA champion coach Phil Jackson in 2011. The injury-plagued Lakers were 27-55 this season, their worst campaign in more than 50 years and the second-worst winning percentage in franchise history. With Kobe Bryant, Steve Nash and Pau Gasol sitting out large chunks of the season while the Lakers lost an NBA-worst 319 man-games to injuries, the 16-time NBA champion franchise missed the playoffs for the first time in nine seasons and only the third time in 38 years. "Given the circumstances, I dont know that anybody could have done a better job than Mike did the past two seasons," Lakers general manager Mitch Kupchak said. "On behalf of the Lakers, we thank Mike for the work ethic, professionalism and positive attitude that he brought to the team every day. We wish him the best of luck." The 62-year-old DAntoni had one year left on his contract, but wanted the Lakers to pick up his option year for 2015-16 to have any chance of success. The Lakers apparently refused, leading to DAntonis resignation. DAntoni walked away from a $4 million payday for next season, although he may receive a portion of that money as severance. A phone message left for DAntoni wasnt immediately returned. Despite the Lakers injuries on a roster consisting mostly of players on one-year contracts, Los Angeles fans largely directed their anger during a rare down season toward DAntoni. Lakers great Magic Johnson, who was sharply critical of DAntonis coaching style, hailed the news on his Twitter account. "Happy days are here again!" Johnson tweeted. "Mike DAntoni resigns as the Lakers coach. I couldnt be happier!" DAntoni also has coached the Nuggets, Suns and Knicks. He reached two Western Conference finals with Nash in Phoenix before having much less success in New York. "Whenever a coach isnt there anymore, for whatever reason, all of us in the fraternity feel badly," San Antonio coach Gregg Popovich said after the Spurs playoff victory over Dallas. "He is a heck of a coach and heck of a guy. You always feel badly when something like that happens. I just hope that what he wants is going to be what happens for him. He is a special guy." DAntonis signature up-tempo style of play seemed an odd match from the start with the aging, ball-dominating Bryant and the Lakers, who ran Jacksons deliberate triangle offence to perfection. Lakers owners Jerry and Jim Buss curiously chose DAntoni to replace Brown over Jackson, who strongly contemplated a return for a third stint on the Los Angeles bench. Jackson became the president of the Knicks in March. Kupchak said he will begin the search immediately for the Lakers fifth head coach since 2011 -- including Jackson, who walked away from the team after falling short of a third consecutive championship. DAntonis departure will allow the Lakers franchise overhaul to begin in earnest after their worst season since 1957-58 back in Minneapolis. Los Angeles missed the post-season for just the second time in the 17-season career of Bryant, who occasionally clashed with DAntoni. The Lakers have a top-10 pick in a strong draft and just three players under contract for next season, including Nash and Bryant. The fourth-leading scorer in NBA history will make more than $48 million over the next two years. A coaching change also might make the Lakers more attractive to Gasol, an unrestricted free agent who intimated he wouldnt consider returning if DAntoni still coached the team. Kupchak has said the Lakers are very interested in re-signing the 7-foot Spaniard, one of the top available free agents. "There would have to be significant changes," Gasol wrote in Spanish on his personal blog recently. "Ive never concealed the fact that DAntonis style doesnt suit my game. Everybody knows this. I dont know if my decision will be swayed by whether Mike stays or leaves. Obviously, the coach is a very important factor for any team." After joining the Lakers on short notice last season, DAntoni was unable to assemble a contending team immediately around Bryant and Dwight Howard, who struggled to embrace the pick-and-roll game so important to DAntonis offence. Los Angeles won 45 games last season despite its awful start under Brown. But the Lakers lost Bryant to a torn Achilles tendon late in the regular season before getting swept out of the first round by San Antonio. Howard left the Lakers as a free agent last summer, fleeing to Houston for less money to escape the Lakers drama and high expectations. Bryant played in just six games this season after breaking a bone near his knee in December, and Los Angeles never had a consistently competitive team in his absence. Nash also missed most of the season with various injuries, but the 40-year-old point guard hopes to play again next season. DAntoni realized he would take the blame for the Lakers woes this season, and the veteran coach seemed comfortable with the prospect when the team packed up for the summer. "Every coach should be under scrutiny," DAntoni said two weeks ago. "Some coaches get fired even after the best years theyve ever had. ... Theres always things we could have done better, and its easier with hindsight. Things dont always go smoothly. For the most part, our guys were very competitive. For us, there are some silver linings in there, but in hindsight, its disappointing for everybody." Jim Konstanty Jersey . Manning was the was the featured speaker at the Bnai Brith sports banquet Thursday night, and he promised the crowd of 1,200 hell keep shouting "Omaha!" at the line of scrimmage. Manning has been using the citys name as part of his pre-snap routine for years, but his "Omaha!" chants put the city of 400,000 in the national spotlight during the playoffs because they came in so loud and clear over television field microphones. "I cant tell you how many suggestions I get on what word I should use next year -- cities, states, businesses, a lot of websites," Manning said. "I am here to tell you I am sticking with Omaha! " With that, the crowd erupted in hoots and applause. Before the banquet, the Greater Omaha Chamber of Commerce presented Manning a check for almost $70,000 for his foundation for at-risk children. Businesses donated money for every pre-snap "Omaha!" shouted by the 2013 NFL MVP. "Im very pleased to be here in the real city of Omaha," he said. "People of this city have been very gracious to me during my visit here. This (donated money) will go a long way to help the children at risk." The chamber of commerce co-ordinated the fundraising effort to thank Manning for the shout-outs and free publicity. Manning gave no hint about what his "Omaha!" chants really mean or the reason why he and other quarterbacks use the word as they change plays at the line. Mannings speech focused on the methods he employed to be a successful NFL quarterback. He stressed the importance of putting in extra work, intense film study and a willingness to be a leader. He also touched on the obstacles the Broncos overcame to reach the Super Bowl, where they lost to Seattle. "We faced a ton of injuries, including losing not one but two centres, lost our left tackle for the entire year, probably the best in the entire league, and we lost a player to a six-game suspension," he said. "And then in the middle of the season our head coach had a heart attack and was out for five weeks. The deck was shuffled, and there were so many things that pointed to having a bad year. We handled more adversity in a single season than most teams will in a five- or 10-year span." The 38-year-old quarterback said he has set no timetable for retirement. "I feel lucky to still be playing the game, and I enjoy being around these young guys. They keep me feeling young," he said. "Im going to keep doing it as long as I can still help the team, as long as I still enjoy the preparation, and as long as the team still wants me to play." ' ' '
PHILADELPHIA -- Alfredo Simon invented new pitches to baffle hitters. Simon allowed five hits over 7 2-3 strong innings, Devin Mesoraco hit a three-run homer and the Cincinnati Reds beat the struggling Philadelphia Phillies 3-0 on Friday night. Simon (5-2) had a season-high eight strikeouts, walked one and hit one batter. Manny Parra got one out in the eighth and Aroldis Chapman struck out pinch-hitter Cesar Hernandez on a 102 mph fastball with runners on second and third for his second save in two tries. Simon mixed a strong fastball with a slider and assorted off-speed pitches to keep the Phillies off-balance. "I was trying to have fun out there," Simon said. A couple of pitches were clocked in the low 70s. "I dont know what he was throwing half the time," Mesoraco said. "I was just catching it and throwing it back." The Phillies havent scored a run in the last 20 innings and were shut out for the fifth time this season. They have lost four straight and eight of 10 to fall a season-worst five games under .500 at 17-22. Kyle Kendrick (0-4) lost his ninth straight decision, dating to last Aug. 11. He allowed three runs and four hits in seven innings. Kendrick hasnt had much help from the offence, however. The Phillies have been shut out five times in those 15 starts and have scored one run or less eight times. "Main thing is I want the team to win," Kendrick said. "Just have to go out there, take care of my job and give my team a chance to win." The Reds didnt have slugger Joey Votto because of a left distal quadriceps strain. The 2010 NL MVP remained in Cincinnati. With Jay Bruce on the disabled list, it was the first time the Reds didnt have Votto and Bruce in their lineup since Sept. 20, 2012, at the Cubs. Mesoraco provided all the support they would need. He ripped a three-run shot in his first at-bat since returning from his second trip to the disabled list. "It was terrific. His first at-bat and he gave us an early cushion," Reds manager Bryan Price said. Mesoraco was sidelined by a left hamstring injury. He arrived to the ballpark less than three hours before the first pitch after making the trip from Norfolk where he played three games for Triple-A Louisville. "I was supposed to leave early this morning and didnt leave until about 3," he said. "I was starting to panic. I didnt feel that good. My legs were tired. Things cleared up after the first swing." A reshuffled lineup didnt solve Philadelphias hitting woes. Leadoff hitter Ben Revere was out with a stomach virus, so Jimmy Rollins batted first for the first time in 70 games. Carlos Ruiz moved up to bat second and John Mayberry Jr. took Reveres spot in centre field. The Phillies squandered a few chances in the early innings. They had runners on first and third with two outs in the first, but Simon struck out Marlon Byrd to end the inning. They had runners on the corners again with one out in the third, but Simon fanned Chase Utley and Ryan Howard. Simon struck out Ruiz to leave another runner on third in the fifth. St. Louis, MO (Sports Network) - The St. Louis Blues announced that Hall of Famer Brett Hull has returned to the franchise. Hull was welcomed as the clubs new executive vice during a press conference at Scottrade Center on Monday. "We are pleased and proud to announce that Brett Hull is coming home to the St. Louis Blues. "Brett was a Hall of Famer on ice, and hell be a Hall of Famer in this capacity as well," said Blues chairman Tom Stillman. Hull was acquired from Calgary late in the 1987-88 season and over the next 10-plus campaigns rewrote the franchise record books. He ranks at the top of the list for goals (527), hat tricks (27), game-winning goals (70), power-play goals (195) and shots on goal (3,367), and second in assists (409), points (936) and shorthanded goals (18). Hull also tallied three consecutive seasons of 70-or-more goals from 1989-92 and owns both the club mark for single-season tallies as well as the NHL record for right wingers with 86, accomplished in 1990-91, Following the end of a legendary 20-year NHL career during which he compiled 741 goals, the 49-year-old moved into management with the Dallas Stars in 2006, rising to the level of co-general manager with Les Jackson in November of 2007. He was eventually fired in 2009, replaced by former Dallas teammate Joe Nieuwendyk, but remained with the club as an advisor. Hull later worked as executive vice president and alternate governor. MONTREAL - Former Montreal Alouettes head coach Marc Trestman can finally take time to enjoy the city he called home for five years. Now coach of the NFLs Chicago Bears, Trestman is briefly back in Montreal this week, where he led the Als to two consecutive Grey Cup victories in 2009 and 2010.The Alouettes (1-1) will honour Trestman at halftime of Montreals regular season home game against the Winnipeg Blue Bombers (2-0) at Percival Molson Stadium on Friday. Its emotional being back, said Trestman, who went 59-31 in five winning seasons with Montreal from 2008 to 2012. Its a privilege to be back. This time, (my wife) and I will see the city and walk the city together, which we really didnt have the chance to do much of when we were here —other than the (Grey Cup) parades. Were looking forward to that.Five years went by in the blink of an eye. We were appreciative of every minute of it. It must have been a great time because it went by so fast.Trestman will take to the field at halftime on Friday, flanked by Als owner Bob Wetenhall and general manager Jim Popp, to receive a large commemorative photograph celebrating his success in Montreal.A humble Trestman said he was very surprised when Wetenhall told him about the ceremony over the phone. To single out a person that was part of a team for five years was very hard for me, said Trestman of Fridays event. There were so many people involved in having the success that we did have.Trestman joined the Alouettes in the winter of 2007 after more than two decades in various coaching and administrative roles at the U.S. collegiate level and with eight different NFL teams — including one year as the assistant head coach of the Miami Dolphins in 2004.In his first year with the Als, Trestman took the team all the way to the Grey Cup final, where they lost to the Calgary Stampeders on home soil. The following year, Trestman led the Alouettes to the teams first Grey Cup in seven years, a come-from-behind victory in the dying seconds over the Saskatchewan Roughriders. Montreal lost only three games in the regular season that year. When the Als hoisted the CFLs top prize again in 2010, Trestman became the only coach in Alouettes history to win consecutive Grey Cups. For his efforts, the 58-year-old was named the CFLs coach of the year.In 2013, Trestman and the Als parted ways when the Minnesota native was offered the reins of the Chicago Bears. In his first year with the Bears, Trestman narrowly missed the playoffs, finishing second in the division with an 8-8 record. But while the game and skill level may be more demanding south of the border, Trestman says coaching in the NFL is very similar to the CFL.Football is the ultimate people business, he said, explaining that the core coaching principles dont change from one league to the next. Trying to send the messages that are the same every day, but sending them in different ways because you have a room full of guys that hear you differently, thats the challenge of coaching. Its still about mutual respect, holding people in high regard, and using the right words in the right language. When you play the game of football, youre really part of something bigger than yourself. When you go through adversity and success, you keep those things in mind, because those are the things that ground you.Since leaving Montreal, Trestman has tried to keep one eye on his former team. He watched with disappointment when the 2-3 Alouettes fired his replacement Dan Hawkins after only five games into the 2013 season — the first time in six years the Alouettes finished the regular season with a losing record (8-10).Trestman was also watching when his former quarterback Anthony Calvillo, professional footballs all-time passing leader, called it quits this year, retiring just five months after suffering a concussion. Trestman had nothing but praise for the 41-year-old Calvillo. What people dont see all the time with Anthony is how really smart he is, and how good he is with words, how articulate he is in his ability to communicate. When Anthony got in front of the team and had something to say, everybody listened. He was always on point, passionate, under control. In the spring, Trestman invited Calvillo down to Chicago to mentor the Bears quarterbacks for a day, including eight-year NFL veteran Jay Culter. The former Als coach even backed Calvillo should the retiree ever decide to try his hand at coaching. He certainly has the football aptitude, but he does have the ability to communicate with all different kinds of people, said Trestman. If he decides to take that route, he wont be a good coach, but a great coach. With the teams newest coach Tom Higgins leading the way from the sidelines, and Ohio native Troy Smith taking the snaps for Montreal this season, the Alouettes are looking to return to their winning ways, and possibly book a ticket to the Grey Cup final for the first time since 2010.Trestman has liked what hes seen from Montreals defence so far this season, and sees a lot of potential in the teams offence. And while Smith has big shoes to fill, Trestman believes things are looking up for his former team.It certainly looks like (Smith) has the skills to be a very good player, said Trestman. He certainly has athletic talent, theres no doubt about that. Expectations in Montreal are so high because of the quarterback play theyve had for so many years. Thats going to be a tough act to follow.I think its an exciting time for the Alouettes. I really do.Notes: Trestman will begin his second season coaching the Bears this September. … The 102nd Grey Cup will be played at Vancouvers BC Place in November. … Syracuse offensive co-ordinator George McDonald recently compared Trestman to former L.A. Lakers coach Phil Jackson. … Trestman played quarterback for the University of Minnesota in college. The International Olympic Committee is reprimanding athletes for wearing items commemorating the dead. IOC spokesman Mark Adams said Monday the Olympic body sent a letter to the Norwegian Olympic Committee after its female cross-country skiers wore black armbands Saturday in honor of a teammates brother, who died on the eve of the Sochi Games. Adams did not give details of the IOC letter, saying that was "the end of the matter." In other disciplines, the IOC banned helmet stickers in tribute to Canadian halfpipe skier Sarah Burke, who died after a crash in training two years ago. Adams said athletes should find "a better place" to express their grief. Australian snowboarder Torah Bright said in an Instagram post on Friday that the IOC has banned competitors from wearing stickers on their gear. The IOC considered it to be a "political protest," Bright wrote. The IOC has strict rules against protests or propaganda during competitions, outlawing any demonstrations in Olympic venues. Although a commemoration of a dead athlete can hardly be considered a political protest, the IOCs tough stance is often explained by fears that allowing someone to display non-Games-related messages on the gear would encourage others to use the games for their own gain. The LPGA Tour combined for a score of 17 under, edging the Champions Tour by one stroke and beating the PGA Tour by nine strokes. Lewis (31-34) had eight birdies, including six birdies on the first nine holes at the Rio Secco Golf Club, and one bogey to pace the LPGA Tour toward its first 3Tour win since 2009. Last year, the LPGA Tour lost a two-hole playoff to the PGA Tour team. Natalie Gulbis, with four birdies and two bogeys, was next for the LPGA Tour at 2 under. Cristie Kerr, the LPGAs third golfer, didnt have her score count on five holes in this two-player, best-ball format that allowed each team to discard one score per hole. The LPGA Tour took over the lead for good on the fifth hole, which Lewis and Kerr birdied and Gulbis bogeyed. Kenny Perry missed a 7-foot birdie putt on the par-4 18th hole that would have sent the match into a playoff with the LPGA Tour team for the Champions Tour Team. Perry and Bernhard Langer didnt score on all 18 holes for the Champions Tour, who were led by Fred Funk at 4 under. "As soon as he (Perry) hit that shot in there I kind of saw last year happening all over again," Lewis said. "I immediately grabbed my glove, and I think all three of us had it in our head that we were going to go to a playoff. It was pretty surprising he missed it, but glad to be on the right side of it this time. "I made six birdies on the froont, so it kind of got us off to a really good start.ddddddddddddI didnt make as many birdies on the back side, but Cristie and Natalie kind of held me in there. The guys can kind of turn it on, it seems, whenever they want to, so we knew coming out of those last three holes we had to make some birdies." Billy Horschel paced the PGA Tour team, which also included Boo Weekley and Jason Day, at even-par 72 (36-36). The PGA went 5 over on the par-4 18th hole, where Horschel had a quadruple-bogey and Weekley bogeyed. The LPGA Tour team received $500,000, the second-place Champions Tour team earned $270,000 and the third-place PGA Tour team got $230,000. It was the sixth win for the LPGA Tour in the 22 years the event has been held. The PGA Tour has claimed nine titles while the Champions Tour has seven. "We were so close last year, and the last couple years for that matter," Kerr said. "We came out strong, we came out trying to win it and really got the break of Kenny missing the putt on the last hole or we would have been in another playoff. "We made so many birdies and they seemed to respond on the back nine really strong, and we didnt get lucky, but we got the break when we needed to." "We were extra excited (about) the win today because we lost a playoff last year," Gulbis said. "So we were in the mix and lost a playoff to the PGA Tour, and it looked like it was almost going to go to playoff again today. So were pretty excited to win it." ' ' '

Teetering Tenures In a live chat on Tuesday afternoon, ESPN.coms Katie Strange said she believes Dustin Byfuglien may not be a member of the Winnipeg Jets much longer. In a response to a question about the future of the 6-foot-5, 265 lbs. defenceman, Strange was short and to the point. "I can see Dustin Byfuglien being dealt, yes. His size, offensive ability, and versatility will likely be attractive to some teams. Right-handed defensemen are hard to find," she wrote. Byfuglien is third among all defenceman with 10 goals and 37 points, but is ranked in the bottom three with a minus-16 rating.Another veteran whose job may be on the line, according to Strange, is New York Rangers forward Brad Richards. Strange said despite the price tag - six years left after this season at $6.67 million per year - the Rangers will decide Richards future based on how many "good years" they believe he has left. Richards will be 40 when his contract expires. Volatile Venture With the post-season now a realistic possibility for the surging Ottawa Senators, general manager Bryan Murray seems ready to make a deal. "We are available to make a deal," he said in a connference call Tuesday.dddddddddddd However, Don Brennan of the Ottawa Sun writes that one of the prized names on the market, Buffalo Sabres forward Matt Moulson, may be a little too pricey for the nations capital. Brennan says one NHL executive believes a deal between the Senators and Sabres "makes sense", but another executive said the Sabres would likely ask for too much in the form of "a minimum of a first (round pick) and a top young player. And Im not even sure they even want a first in this draft." Moulson is making $3.13 million this year and is said to be looking for a long-term deal and double his current wage. The Senators likely wont be willing to give up the pieces or dollars for a deal going forward. Faint Twinkle If the Dallas Stars find themselves sinking further and further out of the playoff picture, a veteran sale might be on the way. Mike Heika of the Dallas News said Tuesday that if the Stars remain on the outside looking in at the beginning of February or after the Olympics, then "players like Vern Fiddler, Ray Whitney and Erik Cole will be made available." The Stars dont have to look far into the past as a reference for such moves. Last year the team sent Brendan Morrow to the Pittsburgh Penguins less than two weeks before the trade deadline and traded Jaromir Jagr to the Boston Bruins and Derek Roy to the Vancouver Canucks the day before. Heika says the Stars may also be interested in moving defencemen Trevor Daley or Alex Goligoski. ' ' '
BELO HORIZONTE, Brazil -- Brazil advanced to the World Cup quarterfinals on Saturday with a 3-2 shootout win over Chile following a tense and thrilling battle that ended 1-1 after extra time. Neymar, David Luiz and Marcelo scored in the shootout, and Brazil goalkeeper Julio Cesar saved two penalties before watching Gonzalo Jaras final attempt hit the post. "My teammates are giving me a lot of strength on the field so I give my best," Cesar said. "Were just three steps away and I hope to give another interview with Brazil partying." Brazil, which extended its 39-year unbeaten streak in home competitive matches to 61, will next face either Colombia or Uruguay in the quarterfinals. Neither team managed to score at the Mineirao Stadium after first-half goals from Luiz and Sanchez, but Brazil came close to an early exit when Mauricio Pinillas shot hit the crossbar in the final moments of extra time. Chile also had the best chance in the second half, when Cesars spectacular save on Charles Aranguizs shot kept the score even. Brazil has reached the quarterfinals of each World Cup since Argentina eliminated it in the second round in 1990. Getting knocked out at that stage in its own World Cup would have been a disaster. But the Brazilians overcame their nerves in the shootout, with Neymar scoring the final penalty after Cesar stopped spot kicks from Pinilla and Sanchez. When Jara hit the post, some of Brazils players celebrated wildly while others fell to the ground, exhausted and emotionally drained. Willian, who missed a penalty for Brazil, sobbed uncontrollably, as Fred helped him to his feet. As the crowd roared, the Brazilian players joined hands in a human chain. The Chileans stood still, staring into the ground, wiping the sweat off their faces. "We tried to give everything, we tried to fight for a dream, and we didnt achieve it," Chile midfielder Arturo Vidal said. "But we gave all our effort on the pitch." Calling it a "harsh" loss, Chile coach Jorge Sampaoli said he had been convinced his team would come out the winner. "Do you think I can be satisfied with the result?" Sampaoli said. "Weve played a hard 120 minutes even if everybody was against us in the stadium." Brazil went ahead in the 18th minute after Thiago Silva deflected Neymars corner kick toward the far post. Luiz was given the goal but replays showed Chile defender Gonzalo Jara may have touched the ball before it went in. Brazil lost the lead when it failed to cope with Chiles aggressive pressure in a throw-in situation deep inside Brazils half of the field. Eduardo Vargas intercepted Hulks pass and found Sanchez on the right side of the area. The Barcelona striker scored easily with a shot toward the far post. Neymar, Fred and Dani Alves had chances in the first half while a second-half goal from Hulk was disallowed when referee Howard Webb ruled he handled the ball. Chile has never beaten Brazil in Brazil but was hoping for another upset after eliminating defending champion Spain in the group stage. "We played the toughest opponents in the tournament, Spain, Holland, Brazil, and we never played like a team that was weaker than anyone else," said Chile goalkeeper Claudio Bravo, who blocked Hulks attempt in the shootout and watched Willians shot go wide. "The truth is that we are very sad because we could have won the match before, we should have taken advantage of some good chances," Bravo said. "We felt we could win and we didnt." Portugal finished level on four points with second-place United States in Group G but with an inferior goal difference. Germany topped the group after beating the U.S. 1-0 in Recife. Ronaldo slammed home the winner at Estadio Nacional with his left foot in the 80th minute to break his drought in Brazil and give Portugal its first win. He barely celebrated, though, with the goal coming too late to help Portugal qualify at the expense of the Americans. "We created many opportunities but we could not finish them," Ronaldo said. "We knew we had to score three goals and were depending on the result of the Germany game and we couldnt do that. "We deserved more, but thats football. We are leaving with our heads held high." Ghana captain Asamaoh Gyans 57th-minute header cancelled out an own goal scored by teammate John Boye in the 31st. It was a bittersweet ending to the World Cup for Ronaldo, who has been nursing a left leg injury and seen the likes of Brazil star Neymar and Argentina captain Lionel Messi upstage him with four goals apiece. The world player of the year earned the man-of-the-match award after a display that could easily have yielded three or four goals. Ronaldo struck the bar in the first half and had two great chances in injury time, but glanced a close-range finish over the bar and then shot straight at Fatawu Dauda when one on one with the goalkeeper. It was too little, too late from Ronaldo, who was downbeat as he trudged off the pitch after the final whistle. The result brought to an end a typically eventful few weeks in Brazil for the Ghanaiaans, who were part of thrilling games against the United States and Germany before their campaign ended in turmoil on and off the pitch.dddddddddddd Their players took to the field in the Brazilian capital amid a dispute with the countrys football federation over alleged unpaid World Cup bonuses. Adding to the chaos, two of the teams star players -- Sulley Muntari and Kevin-Prince Boateng -- were booted out of the squad hours before Thursdays kickoff for disciplinary reasons. "I dont think it had an impact on the game," said Ghana coach Kwesi Appiah, who confirmed that his players received their appearance-fee payments before kickoff as requested. "We had our chances but couldnt take them." It was perhaps no surprise that Ghana delivered its most subdued display of the tournament, ensuring the team finished bottom of the group and resulting in Ronaldo getting time and space to enjoy his most lively performance in Brazil. He could have had a hat trick by the time he finally found the net. An over-hit cross in the fifth minute flew over Dauda and slammed against the bar before the Real Madrid superstar squandered a gilt-edged chance, heading straight at the keeper from six yards (meters) out. After having two stinging shots saved, he was bailed out by Boye, who sliced Miguel Velosos cross into the top corner of his own net to give the Portuguese a halftime lead they just about deserved. Gyan could hardly miss with a header after Kwadwo Asamaohs delicious cross with the outside of his left foot, making it 1-1. With Germany having just taken the lead in Recife, Ghana was only a goal away from progressing at that stage. However, Ronaldo had the final say, making no mistake from eight yards (meters) out after Dauda had parried the ball high into the air. ' ' '
TEMPE, Ariz. -- Los Angeles Angels pitcher Mark Mulder tore his left Achilles tendon Saturday, cutting short his comeback and possibly bringing his career to an end. Mulder last pitched in the majors in 2008 for St. Louis. The 36-year-old left-hander was hoping to make the Angels rotation after being invited in January to spring training, but team spokesman Eric Kay said Mulder felt a pop during agility drills. Mulder will wait for the swelling to go down before surgery is scheduled. He then faces a six- to eight-month recovery, meaning his career could be over. "I can handle this," Mulder wrote on Twitter. "But seeing my son in tears when he saw me in a boot and crutches and I told him I wasnt going to pitch. That was tough." Mulder won 103 games over nine major league seasons with Oakland and St. Louis, including a 21-win season in 2001. He struggled with arm injuries and had surgery over his final two campaigns with the Cardinals, throwing his most recent major league pitch on July 9, 2008. Mulder had been working as a television analyst and was trying to make a comeback after retooling his delivery. He sounded optimistic that he would make the team when pitchers and catchers reported on Friday. "Ive worked hard and what Im doing right now is good," Mulder said. "I know its working and Im excited for the opportunity." Now, a career that was derailed by two shoulder operations could be finished for good after this injury. It was cruel and somewhat fitting for a pitcher who dominated early in his career but was sidelined for much of the latter part. Mulders best season was his second in 2001, when he went 21-8 with a 3.45 ERA while anchoring a dominant rotation with Barry Zito and Tim Hudson. He followed that up by winning 19, 15 and 17 games for Oakland the next three years and then going 16-8 for St. Louis in 2005. But his career got derailed after that. He made just 26 starts and won six games from 2006-08, posting a 7.73 ERA during that time. Wholesale Nike Shoes . Her next challenge comes at the Australian Open, which starts Monday with Williams seeking her 18th Grand Slam title -- an accomplishment that would match Martina Navratilova and Chris Evert. "It would mean a lot to be on the same level as such great players," Williams said in a pre-tournament news conference Saturday, quickly adding a dash of humility. "I still have a lot of work to do. I obviously want to reach that level, but Im not there yet." "Hopefully, Ill get there," she added. The No. 1-ranked, No. 1-seeded player is entering the new season after a spectacular year. In 2013, Williams won 78 of her 82 matches including the French Open and the U.S. Open. She earned more than $12 million in prize money, a record for womens tennis. At 32, an age where most professional players are in decline, Williams is playing the best tennis of her career, says Navratilova, who predicts that Williams will win in Melbourne and go on to eclipse Steffi Grafs 22 major titles in the Open era. "If she can stay healthy, theres no doubt she can go into the 20s. The sky is the limit," Navratilova said earlier this week. In terms of Grand Slam titles, no woman playing professional tennis today comes close. In a distant second place is Williams big sister, Venus, who won seven major titles during a career that is now waning because of age, injuries and an autoimmune disease that saps her energy. Venus last Grand Slam win came at Wimbledon in 2008. No. 2 Maria Sharapova, a four-time Grand Slam winner, is coming back after playing just one post-Wimbledon match in 2013 due to hip and shoulder injuries. She sat out the last two months of the 2013 season and says she is still nursing her shoulder with "precautionary" anti-inflammatories at times. "Im happy to be back playing a Grand Slam," said Sharapova, who toree her rotator cuff in two places in 2008, requiring surgery that kept her off the tour for nearly a year.dddddddddddd. "Im happy to get myself back in form and really start well here." The player who is considered the greatest threat to Williams is No. 2 Victoria Azarenka, the two-time Australian Open defending champion. Williams has defeated Azarenka in 14 of their 17 matches -- but Azarenka has excelled more recently in Melbourne where Serena has won five titles but none since 2010. Asked why she has stumbled in Melbourne in recent years, Williams half-joked: "I just wasnt able to stay on two feet. Literally." Last year, Williams tumbled to the court in her first-round match after turning her right ankle. She was then upset in the quarterfinals by Sloane Stephens. "Ive been doing a lot of exercises for my ankles and trying to make sure that theyre pretty stabilized," said Williams. Williams got a strong start to the new season, with back-to-back wins over Sharapova and Azarenka earlier this month in Brisbane. She beat Sharapova in the semifinals and overcame Azarenka in the final. In Melbourne, Williams will only get the chance to play one of them. Azarenka and Sharapova are on the opposite side of the draw from Williams and could end up playing each other in the semifinals. Sharapovas first-round match is against Bethanie Mattek-Sands on Tuesday, when Azarenka faces Johanna Larsson of Sweden. Williams starts her Australian Open campaign Monday against Australian teenager Ashleigh Barty and has 2011 U.S. Open champion Sam Stosur and two-time Australian finalist Li Na in her half of the draw. Barty, who is 17 and ranked 153rd, is bound to have rowdy home crowd support as she steps onto centre court against the worlds top player. "Obviously theyll want Ashleigh to win, (and want) her to do well," Williams said. "Under any other circumstances. Id probably be rooting for her as well." ' ' '
