24-year-old James Ramsey

What are the three things you most want to see at the 2016 Cheltenham Festival? I was asked that question at the excellent Sky Bet Preview in Leeds last week.My rather selfish response was as follows:- 1. Racing is currently blessed with a collection of brilliant commentators. They have a number of sitting ducks to whip the Cheltenham crowd in to a frenzy next week. Just imagine the roar as the horses freewheel down the hill in the Champion Hurdle if the commentator exclaims Ruby Walsh is taking dead aim on Annie Power. The place will erupt. I hope the commentator gets the chance with Min in the Sky Bet Supreme to shout Ruby hasnt moved a muscle. That is bound to garner a spine tingling roar. There are plenty of other public favourites like Sprinter Sacre and Cue Card that will get the crowd going. Commentators following the story and whipping the racegoers in to a frenzy is all part of the Cheltenham magic. I cant wait. Alex Hammond is joined by Ed Chamberlin to look ahead to an exciting week of racing at the Cheltenham festival 2. I need Gordon Elliott to have a big week. Noble Endeavor, No More Heroes and Cause Of Causes are major fancies and he seems to have well handicapped horses in every handicap. Elliott has a chance to be a top trainer at a big price but looks a good thing in the market without Willie Mullins3. My mum will probably watch one race next week. Not the best Gold Cup for a generation but the race that follows; the Foxhunter. The Victoria Pendleton story sums up racing. Plenty of those within the sport seem to resent it yet those outside of racing love the story.I love the fact that racing will be on the front and back pages of the newspapers on Friday and Saturday. Its a terrific story and a fantastic achievement to be there so lets hope she gets round safe and sound. Moved from John Quinn to Rebecca Curtis following an extended break, showing vague promise in a couple of novice chases in October, before getting his act together in a Cheptow handicap off 130.The form of that race stands up well, even in the context of a Festival handicap, and despite racing off a 9lb higher mark on Tuesday, he is still a big eyecatcher at the weights. Punters have to forgive him a dismal effort at Warwick last month, when he was struggling a long way from the finish. Take advantage of Sky Bets non-runner no bet (hes got an entry in the Kim Muir, too) and I can see him running a big race for Curtis, who won this race last year.ARDAMIRFred Winter (only back on the day if the going is no worse than good to soft)The way the Fred Winter is framed, you are always going to hear plenty of whispers flying around for the majority of the runners. At Sky Bets Preview evening at Leeds Town Hall on Wednesday evening I was happy to hear Denis ORegan raving about my fancy, Ardamir, who is reckoned to be not far off the best juveniles in the Alan King yard. Soft ground will hurt his chances (hence the proviso), in fact, they shouldnt even bother wasting a run on him if conditions are not good to soft or better, as hell struggle to see out the trip on the track. He left earlier form well behind at Doncaster last time, comfortably beating Our Thomas, and that form has a solid look to it in a race that contains a lot more questions than answers. Ed Chamberlin gives us his pick for Tuesdays racing at the Cheltenham festival NEW TO THIS TOWNWeatherbys Champion BumperJessica Harrington is not a fan of throwing arrers at the Champion Bumper, in the hope of hitting the bullseye. She won the race with Cork All Star nine years ago and her runners since have been sparse, to say the least. Its a strong tip in itself that New To This Town is making the journey to Cheltenham and when you throw his strong bumper form into the mix, I dont think there is a better double-figure priced runner across the four days. I liked the promise he showed on his Thurles debut in December but I loved his game when defeating a warm one in the shape of Avenir DUne Vie at Gowran Park at the end of January. The runner-up might be the best bumper horse in the Mullins stable, and if that is the case, New To This Town wins.CUP FINALPertemps Network FinalJP McManus has a load of chances in this competitive handicap. Leave At Dawn has been all the rage and you can see why, looking at his connections. However, hes a weak finisher over this trip (his brother runs on fumes in the closing stages of his races over three miles) and I am giving him a swerve. Cup Final is a lightly-raced seven-year-old of Nicky Hendersons and although his mark is creeping up (139) I believe he is more of a 150 horse and his breeding entitles him to another 10lb on top, being by Presenting out of that classy mare, Asian Maze. I thought he was impressive beating a solid yardstick at Musselburgh last month and he can start delivering on his early promise by winning one of the most competitive handicaps of the week. Plenty will have 7lb+ up their sleeeves, this lad might have a good bit more.THREE MUSKETEERSJLT Novices ChaseDan Skelton will be keen to get a Festival winner on his CV and if he is going to have a winner next week, Three Musketeers is one of his better chances. I like the market confidence behind him of late and I can see him proving his rubbish run in the Grade 2 Dipper Chase to be all wrong. Skeltons horses were not in great form at the turn of the year and hes had plenty of time to get the show back on the road with this impressive-looking six-year-old. I keep going back to his run at Newbury on his second chase start, when he blew away some good horses and if he can jump and travel with the same sort of verve in the JLT, he might be the answer at 14-1. The JLT is on Thursday and while he would get away with good to soft, he probably wouldnt want it any faster than that. Also See: Bet now at Cheltenham! Three pitches later, he was hugging Mike Napoli at home plate after his teammates winning home run. Napoli and Ortiz hit consecutive homers with one out in the 10th inning and the Boston Red Sox rallied past Minnesota 2-1 Wednesday, sending the Twins to their fifth straight loss. NHL Jerseys . "Theyve been good against everybody," he said. Harrington, who tied for first in 2003 and won in 2004, became the first three-time champion of the event. The St. Louis Cardinals added two starting pitchers in the last two days, bringing in John Lackey and Justin Masterson. Numbers Game looks at two trades that improve the Cardinals chances of returning to the postseason for the fourth straight season. The Cardinals Get: RHP John Lackey and RHP Justin Masterson. Lackey, 35, has been a solid starter for the Red Sox, particularly in the past two seasons since undergoing Tommy John surgery in 2012. After a year off for recovery, Lackey has gone 21-20 with a 3.55 ERA and 1.19 WHIP in 50 starts. Not dominant, but good enough to rank 24th among starting pitchers in Fan Graphs WAR over the past two seasons and rank 49th among starting pitchers in the TSN.ca Player Rankings this year. Hes relying more on his fastball, throwing it 65.6% of the time, his highest percentage since 2003, and his average velocity (92.1 MPH) is the best of his career. The Cardinals add a steady veteran pitcher, with postseason experience (3.03 ERA, 1.30 WHIP in 19 postseason appearances), one that can easily fit in the middle of the rotation for a St. Louis team that, one game out of a wild card spot, justifiably has playoff aspirations. While those numbers paint a picture of a nice addition to the Cardinals rotation, there is a definite cherry on top of the sundae and that is that Lackeys contract. While it pays him $15.25-million this year, there is a 2015 club option at league minimum salary because Lackey missed the entire 2012 season (a clause in the contract acknowledging Lackeys previous elbow troubles). Provided that Lackey still intends to pitch next season, he would provide exceptional value to the Cardinals. Masterson is a 29-year-old who has had some good seasons with the Indians, but is undeniably struggling this year, posting a career-worst 5.51 ERA and 1.65 WHIP in 19 starts. Hes recently spent time on the DL with a knee injury, but Mastersons bigger issue is that hes lost some velocity. In 2011, his fastball was clocked, on average, at 92.7 MPH. This year, its down to 89.1 MPH, and for a guy who throws such a high percentage of fastballs, thats a killer. According to Fan Graphs, Mastersons fastball has been the least effective in the majors this season. He has been somewhat unlucky with a career-worst .350 batting average on balls in play, but some of that is simply a reflection of Masterson getting hit hard this season. However, if Masterson fills the fifth spot in the Cardinals rotation --behind Adam Wainwright, Lance Lynn, Lackey and Shelby Miller -- then thats an adequate contribution for the last couple months of this season. He would have to dramatically improve his performance to qualify as a starter for the postseason, but he may be a viable bullpen arm to face right-handed hitters (getting rocked to the tune of a .935 OPS by left-handed batters this season). Earning $9.7625-million this season, Masterson will be eligible for arbitration at seasons end and can be a free agent after the 2015 season. This is an opportunity for the Cardinals to buy low and see if they can get Masterson back on track, while hopefully helping their chances to get into the playoffs this season. The Red Sox Get: RHP Joe Kellly and RF/1B Allen Craig.dddddddddddd A 26-year-old righthander, Kelly has made 38 starts (and 30 relief appearances) for the Cardinals over the past three seasons. As a starter, hes 15-11, with a 3.25 ERA and 1.39 WHIP, with 130 strikeouts in 213 1/3 IP. His ERA is the same, but Kellys strikeout rate is dramatically higher coming out of the bullpen (49 K in 52 2/3 IP). Kelly throws hard (average fastball speed of 94.7 MPH) and has cut back on his ineffective slider, having more success in this seasons small sample, with his curve ball. He should have a great opportunity to start regularly in Boston over the next couple months, in an effort to establish that he can be a rotation regular next season. This early in his career, Kelly is an inexpensive option, making $523,000 this year, and not arbitration eligible until 2016 at the earliest. Craig is a 30-year-old who was a productive hitter before suffering a foot injury last season. He still has an .803 OPS for his career, but has struggled this year, posting seven homers and a .237 batting average, with a .638 OPS. There has to be some expectation on the Red Sox part that they can get Craig back on track. He simply hasnt made as much solid contact this season, with a career-high 56.5% groundball rate. Presuming that Craig can get healthy and bounce back to his previous levels, hes a potential middle of the order bat for the Red Sox who is signed through 2017. Craig is making $2.75-million this year and his contract will pay $26.5-million over the next three seasons, with a club option for 2018. Craig should get a look in left field with the Red Sox, effectively taking over for Jonny Gomes, who was traded to Oakland earlier in the day. Of Craigs 117 career starts in the outfield, 35 have been in left. With Craig leaving St. Louis, that leaves an everyday job for top Cardinals prospect Oscar Taveras. The 22-year-old has struggled (hitting .208 with a .508 OPS in 32 games) this season, but hes the top prospect in the organization, so hell get a crack at the everyday job. If he cant hack it, Jon Jay can handle right field for the Cardinals, with Peter Bourjos in centre, if need be. Lackeys contract situation obviously helped the Red Sox secure real value in return and they got two pieces that could be part of a contending club in 2015. The Indians Get: OF James Ramsey. A first-round pick by the Cardinals in 2012, 24-year-old James Ramsey is an outfielder that is having a pretty strong showing at Double-A, hitting 13 home runs, and hitting .300 with a .916 OPS in 67 games. Ranked by Baseball America as the Cardinals No. 8 prospect in the offseason, Ramsey is likely not too far away from getting his shot in the big leagues. Considering how the season was going for Masterson, thats not a bad move for the Tribe. They get a prospect who will have a chance to play in their outfield in the not-too-distant future, and they can keep young righthanders Trevor Bauer and Danny Salazar in the rotation for the rest of the season.
